...this is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.

How do we truly change things in this day and age?

I've been sparked by the New Day topics of this past week into thinking a lot about activism and political change. You that know me know that I go on about connection, awareness and consciousness.  Those seem like just a bunch of gobblety-gook words unless you understand them literally and how they translate into creating something real. It's not just some concept.

I know many people my age who have been very involved in activism ever since the Viet Nam War days. A fair number of them feel exhausted and as though all their efforts over the years haven't amounted to much change in the long run and even seems wasted. They see politicians and most of the media controlling the whole conversation as never before.  They see partisanship worse now than ever before.  And they see respect and basic decency towards one another sharply declining. Lying has become a tactic.

I see parents and grandparents that feel like they lived during a time when humans had it the best, yet see the world of the future that their children and grandchildren will live in being terribly difficult.  Some of these people are depressed about that and feel humans have failed as a species.

Some tell me they used to believe they just had to work harder in their push to change society only to see that that didn't work either. So they feel disheartened and demoralized. I tell them their work hasn't been wasted at all...they just need to understand the concept of emergence.

What is emergence then?

To understand emergence is to realize the natural, organic way things intertwine. We can't change things by working harder and harder on the specific things we find the most important ourselves without seeing the whole within which we all exist. To push against what you feel separate from inevitably creates exhaustion because it causes a feeling of isolation or being in a small minority. It pinches you off from the rest of it all. You can't succeed trying to go upstream.

Every bit is all a part of the whole and effects everything else, sometimes in very subtle yet profound ways. Quantum physics teaches us this.  Paired electrons do something very interesting.  Even if they are extremely far apart...even astronomical distances apart...the behavior of one instantly determines the behavior of the other.  This is inevitable...and provable every time. Quantum physics shows us that everything is absolutely involved with everything else. This is also true in human dealings.

Emergence or wholism can be explained by metaphor to something you're cooking.  You start with all the individual ingredients, mix them together and cook.  What you end up with is something different than each of the ingredients...but you can't go back.  The new creation is something altogether different than each of the individual ingredients' contribution.  To try to tease them out from the whole again will prove pointless. Another thing that occurs is everything in the bigger whole is now different as well. A new reality is always emerging...all the time.

The world is more interconnected now than ever and it will not cease to become more so. We all know we have a truly global economy now for instance. As this continues, emergence results. It will never be "like the old days" ever again. What is happening right now is all new and what we are all a part of...the continual creation of the emergence of a new whole paradigm.

So, understand then the FOX NEWS - Tea Party is not going away.  Understand too that Karl Rove will fail with his new superpac trying to push against the Tea Party to go back to something akin to how things were before in the Republican Party. Know that the GOP will continue to NOT govern and has become nothing more than "a strategy" purely for political partisanship. That's all the GOP is now and will continue to be...even more so going forward. Believing that it can go back to what it was in the past is futile.

Here's a link showing this exact thing = the GOP strategy regarding the sequester.  You'll see they have no desire to govern. They just hatch strategies to use against Democrats: http://www.thedailybeast.com/...

Also, if you truly want to create real change, you must go with the flow and guide it's direction a bit as you flow with it.  Only by interconnecting more and more will anything you personally deem significantly important ever become a strong enough current within the flow to cause change.

This understanding is critical if you wish to avoid exhaustion or depression.

Communities being created as we see being reported about here in New Day...and the emergence that comes from that...is how to push for change without becoming discouraged, exhausted and defeated. Revealing the truth always within the flow...while understanding what you also witness elsewhere in the flow as being something to influence not something to constantly push against...is the only way to go.

So, what do you want? What's your role in emergence?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
