As a baby boomer, one who was actively involved on politics even before I could vote, I was extremely active in the Civil Rights movement.
After reading some of the comments coming from the Supreme Court, I think I am going to be sick.
Part of the problem is that many younger people take for granted many of the rights they have.
People must remember that for every right- for every individual, regardless of color, ethnicity, religion, or socio-economic circumstance, there was a fight for that right.
I was out in the 60's registering people to vote.
I went on strike to give women who became pregnant the right to know their job would not be taken from them.
I worked with unions to ensure good working conditions, salaries that aligned with a living wage, women, if qualified, could be promoted as men could be promoted.
And the fact that I can sit at work in the coffee lounge during break, and not one person is outraged about the fact that the Supreme Court may very well overturn one of this country's giant leaps of equality, makes my blood boil.
I wanted to scream today when, after I asked what everyone thought of the arguments being heard in the Court, when I waited for a response, when I saw the blank stare in their eyes, I thought I needed to explain.
But when their conversation immediately took the turn to who went home on the Bachelor, I had to walk from the room.
If those of us who understand the importance of what is happening in this government do not make a concerted effort to get the vote out in 2014, then I think I will flush my copy of the Constitution, for it will no longer be effective- unless we can educate voters.
I am really feeling sick about this. With one decision, this Supreme Court to vault us back to the past.
And frankly, I am beginning to feel too old to wave my SDS card again!
