Typical nerd reaction:
George Takei, who played Sulu on Star Trek, appeared on The Ed Show today to come to President Obama's defense, who supposedly gaffed by saying 'Jedi mind meld' to describe Republicans' intransigence on the sequester and his inability to force them to do his bidding. In reality he coined a new phrase, and Takei goes to great pains to explain how a Jedi mind meld is actually possible.
But actor, director and activist George Takei, who played Lt. Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek: The Original Series, insists the president actually got it exactly right.
“Jedis are the guardians of peace and justice. And mind meld is the Vulcan way of having the force of pure, clean communication between one mind and the another,” Takei said on “The Ed Show” on Friday. “Well, that’s what the president is trying to do–bring those two forces together.”
Bonus feature: Michele Bachman and Eric Cantor are Klingons. That actually explains a lot.
The way he talks about these two (science) fictional entities, reconciling how they can join and be one, is actually kind of hilarious, rationalizing as if they are real and actually exist.
8:21 PM PT: Thank you to everyone in the comments! I knew I would not be disappointed!
And, of course, the White House has gone and used its Jedi mind powers to find a way to 'meld' these two memes. h/t begone in the comments:
