According to a recent Pew Research/USA Today poll, more than 83 percent of Americans want background checks for all gun buyers, 56 percent support a ban on assault-style weapons, and 53 percent want a ban on high-capacity magazines. Despite those numbers, some of our elected representatives get mail that’s 4 to 1 against gun control of any kind. And they pay a lot of attention to what shows up in their mailbox.
It’s time for us to flip that number so it reads 4 to 1 FOR common sense gun control. We are the silent majority. But if we remain silent, this carnage is going to continue day after day, week after week, month after month, and year after year.
Send an email to your congressional leaders.
Tell them you support common sense gun control like those proposed by President Obama. And you might want to tell them this, too:
I don’t support the NRA -- and I vote.
Do it today. Do it again next week. And do it every week after that until they get the message. Here are the links:

A lobbyist for an NRA chartered organization in Wisconsin recently said gun-rights proponents need only wait-out the “Connecticut effect” before they can once again start passing laws to loosen restrictions on guns. That lobbyist thinks we will soon forget what happened at Sandy Hook, and those of us who want common sense gun laws will eventually lose interest and fade away. Then the NRA will have our elected representatives all to themselves, just the way they like it.
I think both the lobbyist and the NRA need to know that this time is different. This time we are not going away.
Please help. Call, write, email, or FAX your representatives in Washington, D.C. and tell them to support common sense gun controls. Do it today. And do it again next week. And then every week after that until they get the message.

Addendum for February 25, 2013
A lobbyist for an NRA chartered organization in Wisconsin recently said gun-rights proponents need only wait-out the “Connecticut effect” before they can once again start passing laws to loosen restrictions on guns. The lobbyist thinks we will soon forget what happened at Sandy Hook, and that those of us who want common sense gun laws will eventually lose interest and fade away. Then the NRA will have our elected representatives all to themselves, just the way they like it.
I think that lobbyist and the NRA need to know that this time is different. This time we are not going away.
Please help. Call, write, email, or FAX your representatives in Washington, D.C. and tell them to support common sense gun controls. Do it today. And do it again next week. And then every week after that until they get the message.
