What Animals Did You Love as a Kid?
Note: Since I'm on a little mini-vacation this week and won't even try to format the Weekly Whackos Quiz™ on my iPad on the road, I'm leaving a simpler question for you all instead. I'll catch up with you later this morning!
We didn't have pets when I was a kid. My parents weren't about to pay for dog or cat food with 8 kids already in the house. But from the youngest age I adored animals, loved animals, wanted animals...wanted to
be an animal. Specifically, I wanted to be a horse.
As a preschooler I'd stick one of Mom's scarves in the back waistband of my pants and crawl around the floor on my hands and knees, whinnying and bucking and swishing my scarf-tail. I'd announce my horse name to Mom in the morning, and for the rest of the day wouldn't answer to any other. I spent a lot of time as Flicka, my favorite TV horse, though sometimes I also galloped around the floor as the other TV horse, Fury.
In second grade I met another human horse galloping around the playground, this one on two legs. We loved each other at first whinny, and Lori and I left the "herd" of other little girls to gallop about on our own. It was much easier on the knees of my pants, and we're still best of friends to this day.
Lots of cats and dogs and mice and parakeets and lizards and turtles and other assorted critters have been in my life ever since, but Flicka will always be the first horse in my heart.
Did you have pets as a kid? If not, what animals did you fall in love with?
Mission Actually Accomplished!

Silky has been busted out of the hospital and delivered to his home to mend better!
Goodbye gaggy hospital food and noisy early morning interruptions!
kimoconnor and I picked up Silky at St. Mary's Medical Center near Golden Gate Park after he'd been in the hospital for 9 days following a hip replacement. We delivered him to his flat which is three levels up with no elevator.
He walked a full city block to his apartment and marched up three flights of stairs like a champion, using all the guidance and tips from PT/OT. This is the action I was so worried about but he showed me he can easily manage on his own. I'm not worried at all about his venturing out tomorrow. He knows what his energy level can handle. He's a big boy and Mommy Diva can let go now.
We are out of the woods. It's all good from here. Another hip replacement miracle!
kimoconnor brought him an apple pie, one of the things he's been craving. He's back in wifi heaven so now you'll see him online again with all his charming wit.
He, like nomandates, wouldn't allow full frontal photos from the photo-hawg. Here we have a behind shot (um. the shot I won't allow... just sayin'.) He's moving quickly and hardly relying on his crutches.
Champ.
It's all good, ppl. Every day will get better and better. In a few days he'll be relying on only a cane and then nothing. Walking on his own without the excruciating pain he's had for more than a year.
[Big grin...]
He's STRONG!
You can all exhale now...
