Et maintenant, pour le sujet du jour: What is the single best piece of advice you've received but ignored?

Back in the late 80s I was offered a change in career within my company because I exhibited the aptitude for it. It was to train all current and new buyers to use a computer program to manage our inventories. I loved and embraced the new technology and many old schoolers balked at it, to their detriment. Even though the company matched my salary I declined the job change because I loved the "glamour" of my existing job and wasn't attracted to the "nerdness" of the new tech job.

To shake hands with and watch Gianfranco Ferre, the Missoni family or Christian Lacroix walk down le Prêt-à-Porter à Paris could not be matched.

Computers were just being introduced to handle our company email as executives. It was a large retail company and like the rest of the industry they were adopting management of their inventory with computers. Gradually eliminating the human hash mark makers that my team consisted of. Anyway, I had a première buying position, Women's Designer Buyer. I commuted to New York, London, Milan and Paris to buy très chic inventory to elevate our company's status in the market. There was no position above mine regarding exclusivity of labels. There was no Couture at the time in our company.

Well, in hindsight, I should have taken the somewhat IT job. I know I could have advanced in that division. What an important field to have a toe hold in. So I had to watch as those positions got filled and technology gradually took off. A decade later it finally hit me. If I had waded in at the beginning I could have advanced right along with the growth of that magnificent wave.

Today, I wish I had chosen the IT'ish job. What a mistake...

?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
