New Day Grand Canyon Sunrise Banner
Every day is a new day and with that, a new opportunity.
EVERYONE is welcome and please join us each morning at 7:30 AM PACIFIC
to tell us what you're working on, share your show & tell, vent, whatever you want...
...this is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.
H/t to nomandates who suggested today's topic and inspired by this diary:

Tell us about your favorite mentor and how they inspired you

I've had many good teachers in my life and had mostly good experiences from K-12 and all through college, even in some computer courses I took a few years ago at our local community college after officially becoming a grandma.

Photo looks to be from the 60s
so zoom her hairdo to the 70s
but the face is the same and
the smile priceless
So I have quite a few to consider to pick one. I'd have to go with the teacher I still know today and am friends with on facebook. That's LaRue Lewis, my high school gym teacher. She was only 24 when she was hired in our school district. That could be why we easily related to her and why she understood us. The first thing I remember seeing about her was her huge, contagious and disarming grin. The second thing I noticed was that she was fair. Many teachers in my life practiced favoritism and if you weren't in that preferred group it was a real drag. But the thing that won me over was her treatment of our Indian Dormitory girls, mostly Navajo. They were awesome basketball players and of course Miss Lewis coached their team. The Indian team loved her. I noticed the facial expressions of all the Indian students in all of my classes. They often didn't smile, they were ignored or not engaged. You could see they were just trying to get through the day. I had my mom and dad to live with. They didn't. Stuff like that takes a toll. But in gym, those lady warriors came alive, with fire. Smiles and grins emerged, determination was visible and the teamwork united them. Winning of course validated and strengthened the bond between coach and team. It was great to watch.

She introduced me to the strength I could build in my body. I was skinny and weak. She introduced me to weight lifting. She saw I had potential in running and trained me to run the mile for track competition. She helped me understand how to maintain my current leg strength. I had no idea running would be so satisfying. I did it until my knee gave out in my 40s. These lessons in what a woman can do to her body have stayed with me and I owe my introduction to exercising for good health to her. Healthy habits I maintain today.

LaRue had an easy, constantly positive outlook on life. She was happy and that attitude ruled in her classes. I looked forward to being in her presence as did most of my classmates. It taught me that you can influence a group with only your smile. As you've all experienced, many teachers enter the class with a scowl or boredom on their face and they act as if they warm up an important trance will be broken between student and superior. Please...

One bit of favoritism LaRue did display was taking a couple of us on weekend excursions in her car. With sleeping bags in tow we hit places like the hot springs in Idaho or a camping spot in Kamas, Utah. It was wonderful freedom to get out of our small town in a hot little red sports car. (I was the smallest, so in this two seater, in 1972, I sat on the gear box, no seat belt... on two-lane highways... at night... oy vey...)

LaRue attends our high school reunions and keeps her many students updated at facebook. Her silly sense of humor rules the day there.

I owe her a lot. I will always grin when I think of her.

smileycreek is organizing and asking all Community Quilt recipients to bring their quilts to NN13. We'll assemble at a pre-designated location and time for a group photo with one of the NN13 professional photographers. It will be a group hug celebrating one of the most beloved community building projects we have here at Daily Kos with Sara R and winglion at the center of it. navajo and Glen the Plumber are going to scout out and select a location in advance for all to meet with their quilts for a memorable photo opportunity. ?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
