In a heartfelt and stirring speech[ http://www.bbc.co.uk/...] , The Prime Minister of Australia yesterday apologized to those affected by coercive adoption practices directing her apology mostly to the mothers who were given false assurances and
"betrayed by a system that offered no help or choice"
and who were
"subjected to manipulation, mistreatment and malpractice,"
and to the children who were denied access to their original family.

For those in the U.S. who have never been acknowledged as mothers and endure the continuing pain and grief that such loss brings, we can appreciate the comfort that this recognition provides and we are happy for our Australian sisters. It seems doubtful that anything similar will ever happen in the U.S. given the lobbying by the federally funded, pro adoption groups, The National Council For Adoption and Crisis Pregnancy Centers which lobby against allowing adopted people access to their original birth certificates and which encourages the suppression of natural mothers.
