Teacher's Comments from Ms. Whittington:
My Students: Schools are moving to Common Core Curriculum in an effort to better prepare our students, but this means that we are covering different material than in years past. So imagine trying to implement this new curriculum without all the resources you need.
My sixth grade class is in a school is located in rural northwestern North Carolina. My students really look forward to doing experiments as a way to learn more about their topics. They also love doing research projects on the topics we are studying.
My Project: My students need books, such as Eyewitness Water, Eyewitness Volcano and Earth that cover the unit topics we will be studying, and materials, seven prisms and a tuning fork, to complete experiments for deeper learning in our units. The wave unit involves studying how light is made of different colors of different wave lengths, and how waves act. Using a prism allows the students to actually experience how white light is refracted into the different composite colors of white light.
The wave unit also looks at sound waves, so tuning forks provide an excellent way for students to actually visualize the sound waves by making water ripple. The earth structure unit requires a lot of knowledge about how the earth was formed, and how rocks are continually cycled. It also involves understanding the forces that constantly change our planet such as earth quakes.
As a new teacher I don't have a lot of resources yet, but I want to give my students the best opportunity to learn and grow in their knowledge and appreciation of science. These tools will help me to challenge my students and help them grow in science.
COMPLETED!
Donations of ANY size DID make a BIG difference!
