It's 1:45 am. I'm awake after 4 hours of sleep; I usually am this time of morning. In fifteen minutes I'll likely go back to bed for my other 4 hours and then I'll get up and go to work. I'm a creature of habit. My wee hours routine is to visit the loo, re-hydrate, and check out what's happening on Facebook. Most days, it's hardly more than an exercise in sleep walking, but right now I'm alert and awake. And happy. That's because I've just found out that Florida Atlantic University will NOT be naming its new stadium after the GEO Group, Florida's second largest private prison company, in exchange for a $6 million "gift".
Activism in action! Hundreds of protesters, many of them students, have successfully prevented "Owlcatraz" from becoming a reality.
They've earned the elation they're expressing on their Facebook page. Go give 'em a high five if you're so moved.
To quote a celebrant quoting Ghandi on the FAU: Drop The GEO Group page:
First they ignore you.
Then they laugh at you.
Then they fight you.
Then you win.
GO OWLS!
