They are used to keep senators from a simple majority vote, to keep the senate from simple majority rule, and to keep the equivalent of a veto in the hands of a senate minority. The words, "Nuclear Option" are meant to strike fear into the listener, as if fire and brimstone will rain down if the majority has the courage to simply works its will.

Today on Nevada NPR, Harry Reid suggested he's open to reconsidering his position on changing the filibuster procedure in the senate, changing the rules to allow for an up or down vote on judicial nominees. It shouldn't be just up to him, but we all know his views are crucial here, so it's progress. He should have figured out by now that he's standing in the way of history, and the junior membership won't tolerate that indefinitely.

Preventing democracy from working is a subversion of the constitution, and anyone who's ever passed a fifth grade civics class knows it. It's not just the judicial nominations, but others as well.

That we have over 80 federal judgeships vacant, and other department heads waiting to be confirmed and freshman GOP senators feeling their oats by holding up whatever action they can on the senate floor just because they can, it's time for some sanity to be restored to the process.

Restore majority rule. Restore simple majority votes on all nominees, with talking filibusters only and strict limitations on debate. End the secret holds.

Take back the senate.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

So save your energy. Reid will do this dog and pony show for a few more weeks, and then go right back to the "How disheartening" stchick.

Seriously, he needs new material. The old stuff is going to get him tossed out of the club at this rate.

I meant to say the "Nuclear Option" is hyperbole, that it's as bad as the NRA's overstating its value, that the words, "Nuclear Option" conjure up some sort of world ending catastrophe, suggesting the end of democracy, while ironically, the demise of democracy happens right within earshot of these words' usage.

Their employ keeps people from rational thinking, from referencing the constitution and the simple majority rule of the senate, allowing a tyrannical minority to gain more and more power in the shadows until they have usurped entirely the will of the senate, as we have witness to these last several months.

It's clear there are senators in the minority, and presidential wannabees who see their powers of obstruction more in terms of media presence and political leverage than in terms of actual governance.

When left unchecked, this can bode little but harm for the long term fortunes of our democracy and the good of our country and our economy.

Fixing the filibuster could be an important corrective in finding our way back to some semblance of sanity and civility in the ways of our government.

It should be across the board, every vote, every piece of legislature should be majority rules.  That's the way Democracy is supposed to work.

Harry hasn't a shred of credibility left.  His big & bad act somehow always fizzles out.  Hard to pay attention to the guy anymore.  He always disappoints.
