According to
National Abortion Federation, since 1977, there have been over
6,800 incidents of violence and disruption against abortion providers in the U.S. and Canada, resulting in eight murders.
Early this morning another incident of violence against Planned Parenthood occurred. With axe in hand, a man broke into a Planned Parenthood facility in Bloomington, Indiana just before 4:00 a.m. Police arrested the suspect and identified him as 27-year old, Benjamin D. Curell.
Bloomington Police Captain Joe Qualters, said:
“The suspect made statements indicating the facility was targeted due to abortions being performed there,” Qualters said. “He stated his intent was to damage the building because they ‘kill’ and ‘murder’ babies. He attributed his actions to his religious beliefs. Extensive damage had been done to the building and office equipment with the ax,” Qualters said. “There was also red paint that had been splashed onto the building. Curell was taken into custody without incident.
The police responded to a call of a man trying to break into the building, and found the suspect inside:
A Planned Parenthood official said today, the incident “will not deter us from continuing our mission. We are still determining the extent of the property damage,” said Betty Cockrum, the organization’s president and CEO. ” We are happy to say that it appears no confidential patient information was accessed by this vandal.”
The Bloomington Planned Parenthood Center was “only open for limited purposes today,” Cockrum said in a prepared statement, but “ will again be fully up and running as soon as possible.”
Planned Parenthood provides sexual and reproductive health care, education, and information to nearly five million women, men, and adolescents worldwide each year.
Only three percent of all Planned Parenthood health services are abortion services.
The suspect, Currell, is now at the Monroe County jail facing Class D Felony.
