Ok, someone somewhere screwed up big time, and I'm sure there's lots more like her. She's 90, so she's been on medicare/SS for a long time. My father supported her for most of her life, and they retired on his pension, with SS a supplemental income for them. So, medicare was paid from from social security, and the part B was paid for from his pension as they provided medical as part of that pension. All worked fine for what 25 years, until this year, so what changed?
This year, she started getting letters from an unknown company saying that she owed an additional $125 for Part B. blink
ahhh, why?
doesn't say
ahhh, who's the company?
not her husband's former employer
not SS
I was doing her taxes, and check, both deductions from pension and SS 1099s list their payments, so no change there. Why is this going on? So I called SS. Boy was that a waste of time. Having power of attorneys (medical and financial) is meaningless, she had to be conserved. Well, there's a lot of difference between being comfortable doing your finances and being unable to handle day to day affairs.
I'll find out more next week, when I fly down to see her, and call SS with her there with me on the extension. (even if that means buying an extension first)
If you've parents who you've trained to ignore all those part B scams they're being sent all the time. make sure this isn't one they've thrown away!
(was this one of those Obamacare things they added? If so, why didn't they just increase the deductions from the SS check? Or, why didn't they make it an option at least?)
Man, there's a lot of aged seniors who don't need this extra stress...
(including this one)
Just trying to write this out, so I can sleep and maybe help someone else not get that final letter.
