Mark Twain once wrote that the coldest winters he ever endured was a summer in San Francisco, and it is true, summers in San Francisco are COLD. My home care attendant and I knew this when we packed and when we made our reservations for a hotel. We totally forgot about the "budget" $50 a night KNOWING they lacked basic amenities, and have really fallen in love with America's Best Value Inn and it chain accommodation. So when it turned out I was going to have to spend the night in SF to finish labs and get prescriptions, we decided to book a room at America's Best Value Inn, knowing we would get a clean room, with bathroom, and we thought HEAT! We book a $77 a night room, not their cheapest, but one with 2 full size beds so my attendant and I could sleep in the same room and save some money.
Well at about 1AM I awoke shivering under my comforter. I looked over to see my attendant also awake and shivering, as the wind HOWLED. I went over to the radiator and turned it on, NO HEAT, I went to the lobby to ask that the heat be turned on and was told I would need to UPGRADE my room, I was flabbergasted. When he quoted me on the price of a room upgrade I turned WHITE in terror, my fixed income could not afford those rates!
Inn a flash of Insight I decided to run to the 24 hour Walmart and space heater. In no time the space heater got the room to a livable temp. but I was out another $24! Now I am sitting stewing thinking that America's Best Value Inn should reimburse me for this expense becuase I feel a chain that makes it money on its reputation should supply things LIKE HEAT in San Francisco in the COLD of Summer, and AIR CONDITIONING in Atlanta in the heat of summer! These are just basic STANDARDS that I thought this chain provided with out ADDED charges!
