Received this e-mail today from Senator Al Franken (D. MN):
Every time we come up on an important debate -- whether it’s immigration, the budget, or the future of Medicare and Social Security -- I can’t help but feel like there’s an elephant in the room.
That elephant’s name is Citizens United. Citizens United is a terrible name for an elephant -- and an even worse influence on our politics. It makes the right-wing special interests who can afford to spend unlimited money on attack ads even more powerful. And it makes fighting for progressive causes even more difficult.
Help me get this elephant out of the room. Sign my petition and let’s fight to overturn Citizens United so we can make real progress:

With Citizens United in place, the other side has an unfair advantage. You don’t see a lot of big corporate money behind causes like preserving Medicare, keeping Social Security out of the hands of Wall Street, giving young immigrants a shot at the American dream, and helping the middle class thrive.
No -- the big corporate money is on the side of the big banks, the drug companies, and the other big corporations. That means it ends up in the hands of Karl Rove and his allies. And that means it ends up on TV, attacking progressive who are fighting for the right things.
It’s like playing tug-of-war -- and the other side has an elephant on its team.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Sign my petition. Let’s kick the elephant out of the room and chuck Citizens United into the Dumpster of Bad Ideas.
Thanks for helping me take a stand against Citizens United.
Al
P.S.: One way or another, we’ve got to get rid of this horrible decision. And the best way to start is with real grassroots action. Click here to sign my petition calling for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United:
