Good morning GUSmenscherino/as!!!  I'm still on my Christopher Guest high and realized I have more boyfriends than I can count (ok, I can count them).  There's ericlewis0 , Phil S 33, silkie, paulitics!!!, Steve Buscemi and Eugene Levy.  (there's a few more but they aren't famous)

I'm now most recently stalking Eugene Levy (online and in my video collection).  I find him very, very, very accessible to my wiles.  Thankfully, effey posted a video of a song I love that he did with Catherine O'Hara (my rival) in "A Mighty Wind."  The full song didn't make it to the final cut of the movie -- but it is too gorgeous to miss.  And it explains why I am in love with Eugene Levy (and my other boyfriends understand).

Important stuff now before I tell you how much I love this guy.

GUS (Gave Up Smoking) is a community support diary for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. If you are quitting or thinking of quitting, please -- join us!  We kindly ask that politics be left out.

You can also click the GUS tag to view all diary posts, or access the GUS Library at dKosopedia for a great list of stop-smoking links. Check it out! GUS library.

A message to ALL quitters. You don't have to avoid GUS if you have a failed quit.  We won't give you a bad time and we consider the failed quits as "practice" for the real quit.

Quit Keeper widget which is an outstanding aid for those beginning the difficult path to quitting.  It lets you know how long you haven't smoked, how many cigs you haven't smoked, how much money you've saved.

Quit Smoking Counter    h/tGDbot.  For those of you who have had a problem with Quit Keeper or want a different counter!

I love the essence of true talent and I love many Canadians.  What the hank?  We have gotten k.d. lang and Leonard Cohen from Canada.  We just don't want their effing tar sands.  I love the camping trip in a '76 Pinto (exploding machine)  I took in '77 across Canada from British Columbia to somewhere -- but it included Alberta -- Banff and heaven.  Actually, the trip started in Connecticut -- went across to the wrong coast, then up the wrong coast into Canada and then . . . .

Baby Eugene Levy:

Youtube sucks at finding truly marvelous Eugene Levy stuff -- crappy videos.  My last diary had the best of his genius.  Ok, then there's the Levy/Steve Martin/Queen Latifah/Betty White movie that was hilarious at moments in "Bringing Down the House," a B movie which I still find endearing.

What I love about Eugene Levy is -- well, Eugene Levy.  He is an amazing talent.  He can act, sing and play the guitar.  And -- did I say, SING?  He has a gorgeous voice.  And he inspires me to post a really good Canadian Jewish recipe.

Jewish Colcannon

Colcannon is a traditional Jewish/Irish potato dish. It's unique and simple recipe has become popular around the world. It normally includes chopped kale cabbage of green cabbage mixed with hot floury mashed potatoes.

This simple recipe is an ideal one to make with the kids. The word colcannon is from the [Yiddish] Gaelic cal ceannann' which literally means white-headed cabbage.

In the past charms were mixed in with the colcannon. Depending on what charm you found it was seen as a portent for the future. A button meant you would remain a bachelor and a thimble meant you would remain a spinster for the coming year. A ring meant you would get married and a coin meant you would come into wealth. Others filled their socks with colcannon and hung them from the handle of the front door in the belief that the first man through the door would be their future husband.

Colcannon Recipe

Ingredients

4 lbs (1.8kg) potatoes, or about 7-8 large potatoes (‘old’ potatoes or russet potatoes are best, waxy potatoes won’t do)
1 green cabbage or Kale
1 cup ( 7 fl oz, 240 ml) milk (or cream)
1 stick (4oz, 120g) butter, divided into three parts
4-5 scallions (green onions), chopped
Salt and Pepper
Fresh Parsley or chives *Not everyone adds scallions to colcannon, but they do add something worth having in my opinion.

Method

Peel and boil the potatoes. Remove the core from the cabbage, slice it thinly, and put into a large saucepan. Cover with boiling water from the kettle and keep at a slow rolling boil until the cabbage is just wilted and has turned a darker green. This can take anything from 3-5 minutes depending on the cabbage. Test it and don’t let it overcook, if anything it should be slightly undercooked.

When the cabbage is cooked, drain it well, squeeze to get any excess moisture out, then return to the saucepan. Add one third of the butter and cover. Leave it covered and in a warm place, but not on a burner, with the butter melting gently into it while you continue.

When the potatoes are soft, drain and return the saucepan, with the drained potatoes in, to a low burner, leaving the lid off so that any excess moisture can evaporate. When they are perfectly dry, add the milk to the saucepan along with a third of the butter and the chopped scallions if you are using them. Allow the milk to warm but not boil – it is about right when the butter has fully melted into it and it starting to steam.

With a potato masher or a fork mash the potatoes thoroughly into the butter/milk mixture. Do NOT pass through a ricer or, worse, beat in a mixer as it will make the potatoes gluey and disgusting.
Mix the cabbage thoroughly through the mashed potato.

Before serving season with a little salt and sprinkle with fresh parsley or chives. Most importantly, make a well in the centre of the mound of potato and put the last third of the butter in there to melt.

New voices are ALWAYS appreciated and always welcome.

Solid science education is the best inoculation against ignorance.

The Inoculation Project meets Sundays at 10 am ET / 7 am PT to help fund science and math projects in red-state public school classrooms and grow more rational voters. Join us at the link each week to cheer on our effort -- no cash required, but even small donations make a big difference!
May 8, 1972 (May 8 being tomorrow but 1972 was 41 years ago) is the day I took my first vows in the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambery.  It was a happy day because I rid myself of an evil woman (novice mistress) and entered my major challenge period -- complying with the vow of obedience.  I lost.  But I didn't lose a precious part of my life -- a community of truly holy women.  Premature happy vow day to me.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
