Continuing on a previous theme of mine, here is today's discussion topic, which hopefully you have a few opinions on.
"Democrats want Government to run your Life." True, False, It Depends.
First, some background premises for this bold assertion:
Difference Between Republicans and Democrats
Democrats believe it is the responsibility of government to care for all individuals, even if it means giving up some individual rights and/or subordinating enterprise and initiative.
[...]
Democrats believe that the economy is too complicated for individuals to navigate alone. They believe that business decisions should be guided by government officials and in the best interest of labor unions.
[...]
Democrats believe that government knows what is best for individuals. They argue that federal bureaucrats better understand the needs of a community than a locally elected council and the federal government should define the tax burden necessary to meet its obligations, because this is too complicated for individuals to understand.
[...]
Democrats believe that as the world superpower, it is a fundamental right for the United States to provide unconditional aid and comfort to the citizens of other nations. Democrats believe in open borders, unconditional amnesty, and that the laws of this nation be curtailed to provide non-emergency assistance and legal forms of identification to foreign nationals.
-- signed the California Republican Party
Hmmmm? THEY really get it, eh?
Now for an opposing point of view on what being a Democratic supporter is presumably all about:
2012 Democratic National Platform
Democrats know that America prospers when we're all in it together. We see an America where everyone has a fair shot, does their fair share, and plays by the same rules. We see an America that out-educates, out-builds, and out-innovates the rest of the world.
[...]
We Democrats offer America the opportunity to move our country forward by creating an economy built to last and built from the middle out. Mitt Romney and the Republican Party have a drastically different vision. They still believe the best way to grow the economy is from the top down—the same approach that benefited the wealthy few but crashed the economy and crushed the middle class.
[...]
Reclaiming the economic security of the middle class is the challenge we must overcome today. That begins by restoring the basic values that made our country great, and restoring for everyone who works hard and plays by the rules the opportunity to find a job that pays the bills, turn an idea into a profitable business, care for your family, afford a home you call your own and health care you can count on, retire with dignity and respect, and, most of all, give your children the kind of education that allows them to dream even bigger and go even further than you ever imagined.
[...]
Democrats see a young country continually made stronger by the greatest diversity of talent and ingenuity in the world, and a nation of people drawn to our shores from every corner of the globe. We believe America can succeed because the American people have never failed and there is nothing that together we cannot accomplish.
-- signed the Democratic National Committee
What say you? Which of these two major political parties, best describes your political goals, ideals, and quality of life interests?
The R's definition of society, or the the D's vision of what we could one day be?
The choice is ours, as always. Voting matters. Pass it on.
Are "We all in this together?"
Or is "each person responsible for his or her own place in society." -- ie. that we're each "on our own" -- to "Sink or Swim" as the individual case may be?
The choice (and the vision) is ours to pursue; and in the best interest of ... whom exactly, again?
