Received this e-mail from Senator Tom Udall (D. NM) today:
The National Security Administration (NSA) is collecting phone records from millions of Americans and vast amounts of internet data from US online companies. And we don't know what else.

I voted against the PATRIOT Act during the Bush administration precisely because I worried about this kind of invasion of Americans’ privacy. The bill simply doesn’t protect our civil liberties.

I understand that the government needs to have to ability to defend us against national security threats. But that doesn’t mean an unchecked ability to invade our privacy.

There needs to be more transparency. There needs to be more oversight. Join me in asking the Administration to provide straight answers on the NSA's collection of Americans' private information. Click here to add your name:

Americans have a constitutional right to privacy. As a former Attorney General, I take the responsibility for protecting that right seriously.

We need to get to the bottom of this. We deserve answers. And if enough of us join together and demand more information from President Obama and his administration, I think we can get it:

Thank you for your support on this critical issue.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

They're just trolling for names.  How many of these do we have to sign before we figure out that all they do is let you believe you've done something when you've done nothing at all except get yourself on one more list asking for money?

If the Senator wants to act, then act, do something.  He doesn't need a petition.

I'm taking my "petition" to the polls in 2014 and 2016 even if I have to write in "Snowden" on the ballot.

  •  Udall deserves a lot of credit (4+ / 0-)

He spoke at a local ACLU meeting when he was still a Representative after the passage of the Patriot Act, and told the real story about how the bill was swapped out at the eleventh hour for a pre-written alternative bill no one had time to read. He didn't vote for it, and wouldn't vote for it. He told the full story of the shenanigans that went on.

At the airport, he goes through the normal TSA lines, takes off his cowboy boots, and stands in line like everyone else. I got to be in line after him one day, and got to talk to him for a bit. He's the real deal.
