We all have that favorite treat. Klondike Bars are mine. Today I found only a No Sugar Added version that contains Aspartame at our local Smiths/Krogers grocery story. Two weeks ago the original version, with sugar was on the shelf.
Why is Aspartame being pushed by food producers? Why aren't both version available? I noticed that most of the Nestle' products were No Sugar Added this week.
Aspartame is a controversial chemical additive. The FDA banned aspartame until Rumsfeld pulled his weight when Reagan was elected.
Considering the HUGE controversy, shouldn't the public be warned that a product contains the chemical aspartame?
Do grocers have a responsibility to help the public understand that No Sugar Added most often means Made With Aspartame.
I'm sure most here are aware that the Dairy industry wants to add Aspartame to milk and milk products. Ostensibly to reduce obesity.
Aspartame actually causes sugar cravings and weight gain!
The US Congressional record states, "Aspartame makes you crave carbohydrates and will make you FAT." Dr. H. J. Roberts, diabetic specialist, stated that when he got patients off aspartame, their average weight loss was 19 pounds per person. It is NOT A DIET PRODUCT!
Why not use
Stevia instead?
The natives in South America used stevia primarily as a sweetener, a practice adopted by European colonists in local regions. The indigenous tribes also used stevia to treat diabetes. (Leung)
Stevia accounts for nearly 40% of the sweetener market in Japan. Due to more strict safety restrictions, aspartame and saccharin are banned.
Even a small amount of Aspartame gives me a very painful headache. I need to know it's in my food and would like an easily visible statement that This Product Contains Aspartame, not squeezed into the long, Lilliputian print that is the List of Ingredients.
The history of aspartame is like a chapter out of a CORRUPT GOVERNMENT novel. I personally know of three diet soda chugging people that developed brain tumors, just like the FDA studies B.R. (Before Rumsfeld) said they could. BRAIN TUMORS!
We can add aspartame to Searle, Monsanto, and Donald Rumsfeld's crimes against humanity.
In 1985, Monsanto purchased G.D. Searle, the chemical company that held the patent to aspartame, the active ingredient in NutraSweet. Monsanto was apparently untroubled by aspartame's clouded past, including the report of a 1980 FDA Board of Inquiry, comprised of three independent scientists, which confirmed that it "might induce brain tumors." The FDA had previously banned aspartame based on this finding, only to have then-Searle Chairman Donald Rumsfeld vow to "call in his markers," to get it approved.
How Rumsfeld got aspartame approved as a food and beverage additive is appalling.
That Congress hasn't intervened and honored the many studies before Rumsfeld's buddy was appointed to head the FDA under Reagan is equally appalling. You can read the details at the exellant Huffington report above.
For now, I WANT MY KLONDIKE BARS WITHOUT ASPARTAME thank you very much. Are you listening Nestlé?
Caveat Emptor!
I updated Wikipedia, btw, and added:
NO SUGAR ADDED Klondike Bars contain ASPARTAME, buyer BEWARE
We'll see if it sticks.
