Teacher's Comments from Mrs. Spurway:
My Students: Build, Build, BUILD!!! How much fun is it to explore new concepts through hands-on experiences? STEM education (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) is becoming more important, so giving kids real experiences that ignite their interest is more and more important.
My students are a mix of 4th-6th grade boys and girls who have qualified for our district's Gifted and Talented program. In a once-a-week pull out setting we address their individual needs for more problem solving, critical, and creative thinking. Through team challenges, independent study, and enrichment activities we push the students to become more flexible and fluent in their thinking skills.
My Project: Balsa Wood Bridge Building is an activity that supports a variety of curricula, including geometry, physics, technology education, math, and general science. This project will challenge students to come up with unique solutions, practice the design process and test their own creation's strength. Giving students experiences in the STEM fields will help guide them into career fields that will benefit society.
Bringing enrichment opportunities in varied fields is so important for gifted and talented students. Giving students the opportunity to explore concepts and learn through their experiences leaves them with a lifetime memory. This hands-on activity involving bridge building will be one that students won't forget.
