explains why most Republican politicians oppose treating America's 11 million immigrants like human beings:
“It would hurt Republicans, and I don’t think you can make an argument otherwise,” [Rep. Steve] King said. “Two out of every three of the new citizens would be Democrats.”
To be fair, most of the people who vote Republican aren't as cynical as King—
poll after poll shows that they recognize that America needs immigration reform and that a path to citizenship needs to be part of it. But given that most Republican politicians share King's outlook, it's really not hard to see why so many Latinos are repulsed by today's GOP.
