David Young pledges to retake control of
the U.S. Senate one yarmulke at a time.
Iowa's Faith and Freedom Coalition hosted Republican candidates for U.S. Senate on Monday night, including David Young, former chief of staff to current U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley ...
and this happened:
When answering the question about being part of the “brotherhood,” [aka Senate moderates who oppose conservative hardliners] Young said that what really needs to happen in Washington D.C. is a change of hearts and minds. Young said as a Senator, he would invite New York Senator Chuck Schumer to lunch so that he could share the good news of Jesus Christ.
As Jonathan Chait
notes, Young's choice of Schumer was confusing. Sure, if Young managed to convert Schumer to Christianity it would be one hell of a pickup, but I agree with Chait that if Young really wants to convert Jewish senators, he'd be better off starting with someone like Michael Benet, who most people don't even realize is Jewish and doesn't have many Jewish constituents.
But this is the real kicker:
Schumer is also a really good negotiator, and Young could walk out of the room having agreed to become a Jew.
If Young wins the nomination, I don't think he'll end up being Iowa's next senator. But if he does somehow manage to win and follows through on his promise, he's been warned.
Caveat emptor, pal.
