I've seen a lot of diaries recently about how other states are making it more difficult to register to vote. Maryland is going in the opposite direction--they are trying to make it as easy as possible to register to vote.
Recently, I received my application to renew my driver's license by mail in Maryland. The application tells you that if you wish to renew your driver's license, you must complete Sections A, C, and D. Question #7, the very first question in section C, states:
Do you wish to apply to register to vote in Maryland? If yes, complete the application below
Next to this question are circles to complete marking Yes or No.
Then right below Section D on the form in large letters is a "Maryland Voter Registration Application." Many of the questions are already filled in such as my name, address, date of birth and personal ID number (my driver's license number). The form then tells you that you should detach the voter registration form from the driver's license renewal and that you can mail the voter registration application to either the MVA or the Maryland Board of Elections. The voter registration form also allows voters to update their voter registration by providing their old voter registration address so that it can be canceled out in favor of registration at their new address.
It should be this easy everywhere.
