It is said that duct tape, which is not actually functional on duct work, can be used to fix nearly anything, from holding up a hem to keeping your car hood on when the latch breaks. There are things in the "toolbox" that have alternative uses as well. Some of these approaches to fixing a problem are pretty creative!

As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone in IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news! IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime!
Ok, we do have a diary schedule. But, when you are ready to write that diary, either post in thread or send FloridaSNMOM a Kosmail with the date. If you need someone to fill in, ditto. FloridaSNMOM is here on and off through the day usually from around 9:30 or 10 am eastern to around 11 pm eastern.
These are some interesting new uses for those extra wrenches...........the first is actually pretty, but dining with a crescent wrench would seem to take a long time!
The next two are seen as "redneck" ingenuity!................I see a potential explosion and grandmother disinheriting that grandson for disrespecting her dining set.
The third set of photos are showing new ways to use familiar tools; Partner says the floor jack pulling out the fence post is actually a good idea in the right situation, but cringed at the "damage" to the hand saw used to cut pizza!
.............Finally there are some pics that are just plain wrong, FAIL, and "The Stoopid, it burns!"
I have seen some "substitute" approaches that worked and others that were a disaster. Using a screwdriver with a plastic handle to see if there was electricity, etc.
I think one of my biggest fails was when I had my first house and there was a small flood in the basement, about two feet of water. I felt compelled to unplug the washer, dryer and freezer, but needed to be insulated from the potential shock.
AHa! I thought, I will wear my rubber bottomed "moon boots", electricity can't pass through rubber! As I stepped into the water, heading for the first plug, my feet felt wet. This is because the boots were not waterproof and they were shorter than the water was deep. I persisted however, because the freezer was actually bobbing in the water!
Somehow, it never occurred to me that electricity can travel through the water in my boots, and I unplugged the freezer. As I headed for the washer, my brain unfroze, and I didn't touch the next plug. As I sheepishly went back up the stairs, with water gushing from the fabric boots with the rubber bottoms, I reflected upon the angel which must have been watching over me as I waded into stupidity, but I still didn't get electrocuted that morning.
Have you got a story or two to share today?
