...Vladimir Putin?
Makes sense - they gave one to Barack Obama - who by his own admission, didn't deserve it.
Now, the blunders of Team Obama has enabled Russia to propose a plan that actually addresses the issue of Chemical Weapons....maybe those other diaries that claim that Obama is so smart and this was his plan all along are right....or maybe they're just delusional, blind supporters of an administration that really screwed the pooch on the entire Syria conflict?
I'm going to give credit to Russia and Putin -
The Obama administration has been hell bent over striking Syria - from the moment the CW videos appeared - the reaction was to strike militarily. The only reason that the US didn't strike was that Great Britain had the common sense to vote against a military strike. That set off a chain of stumbles, bumbles and fumbles that almost make the Bush Administration look like a well run machine.
Out came the videos of candidate Obama saying he thought (rightfully so) that a POTUS should seek congressional approval for a military strike that wasn't a direct, imminent threat to the security of our country. So he had to backtrack and go to our congress seeking authorization for a strike. Kerry goes out and basically says what we are, what we're not targeting - how small it's going to be - how limited - how we won't directly target Assad or the chemical weapons.
Obama goes to the G20 and comes back with his administrations "Coalition of the willing" which includes (but they're not sure yet) France.....and Saudi Arabia (they'll make it OK because they are going to pay for it.....so when did the US Military become SA paid mercenaries?) and Australia, Albania, Kosovo, Canada, Denmark, Poland, Romania and Turkey - not that any of these are anteing up troops but - they have our back - how comforting is that?
The Arab League was petitioned - the EU - all support is tepid at best.
The UN inspections will only yield if chemical weapons were used - not who used them...but the US already knows they were used and Assad did it.
The US public and people all over the world are against a military strike - especially one that has no goal other than to "punish Assad" who Kerry compared to Hitler.
The administration has been floating around an edited version of the gas attacks which are intended to get an emotional response - not a logical one. Emotions result in bombs - rational responses result in diplomacy.
Putin sees this and there's a golden opportunity to make himself a Russia look like the adult in the room. They come up with a plan that will actually get rid of the CW - the plan makes so much sense that the Obama administration (who are smart enough to know that they really got their tits in a wringer with their incompetent handling of the Syria situation) supports it. They now have a potential, face saving out.
China supports it, the EU supports it, Iran supports it....even Syria supports it.
I think the only ones that don't support it are the Al Qeada backed Syrian rebels.
So, if this all works out - I think the ex KGB leader Vladimir Putin deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.
He may actually deserve it.
