Hey all!
Welcome to Thursday evening's GUS Diary. I am sorry to be getting this up late, particularly for GUS friends in the eastern time zones. I saw a doctor this afternoon and, more important, he saw me. Everything is fine, but everything took a lot longer than I expected.
Although the doctor I saw today was a specialist and not my regular, primary care physician, he was happy to hear that it has been 66 days since I last smoked a cigarette.
Side question - You know back when I was in college & law school, I knew quite a few medical students and I would estimate that two out of three of them smoked. I know when I was a kid that there were quite a few doctors who smoked. I wonder if that's changed much.
GUS (Gave Up Smoking) is a community support diary for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. If you are quitting or thinking of quitting, please -- join us! We kindly ask that politics be left out.
Click the GUS tag to view all diary posts. Check out the GUS Library at dKosopedia for a great list of stop-smoking links.
A message to ALL quitters. You don't have to avoid GUS if you have a failed quit. We won't give you a bad time; we consider the failed quits as "practice" for the real quit.
Quit Keeper is a widget for those beginning the difficult path to quitting. It lets you know how long you haven't smoked, how many cigarettes you have not smoked, and how much money you have spent on other things.
And there is Quit Smoking Counter For those of you who have had a problem with Quit Keeper or want a different counter!
Do you all mind answering a few questions about education? I don't want to stray into the politics of it all, or any particular program, but it seems to me that we, the people, rarely talk about education in the broadest sense.
First, by education, I mean elementary & high school, the education that everybody gets for free if they want it.
Second, where I'm coming from is that there's too much talk about education as preparation for employment. I want to know what else it is and what else it is and should be. And I hate talking about test scores and comparisons with other countries.
The question or questions that I have for anyone willing to answer is, what should an education consist of? That is, if you were the dictator of American education, what would you insist that every 18 year old know and be able to do?
What in your education was of value to you in your life, not in job seeking, but in making your life more worth living?
What do you wish had been included as part of your education that was not?
I am not doing any research or any writing on this yet, but it's something I want to explore and I want to know what non-experts think.
GUS Buddies Forever!
