I can't tell you fine people how many times over the last coupe of days that I've heard these same right wing talking points repeated:

1)  "Why won't President Obama and Dems negotiate?"
2)  "Why will President Obama negotiate with Putin (or Iran) and not with us?

Of course this is combined with a fervent denial that the Republicans are taking the Govt hostage in order to get their way.

The sad reality is that there is one very simple and easy way to blow these talking points out of the water, and I have not heard it from one progressive media person or Democratic politician:

All we need our people to do is ask one question: "What are the Republicans offering?"
The whole concept of a negotiation is based on two sides wanting something and having to give up something else in order to get it.  This question lays bare the hostage taking reality or our present situation.  The Republicans aren't offering anything to the Democrats except to fund the Govt.  Its not like they are offering an increase in medicaid funding in return for the delay.

Russia offered to make Assad sign the chemical weapons ban and to turn over his gas stockpiles in EXCHANGE for Obama not crippling Assad through a bombing campaign.  Thats a negotiation.

Iran is offering to deal on their nuclear program in EXCHANGE for the lifting of sanctions.  Thats a negotiation.

So if we want to make it crystal clear to the nation just what the nature of the Republican hostage demands are.  All we need to do is ask: "What are you offering?"

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Oh, it gets even better...courtesy of Harry Reid: (8+ / 0-)
DANA BASH: You all talked about children with cancer unable to go to clinical trials. The House is presumably going to pass a bill that funds at least the NIH. Given what you’ve said, will you at least pass that? And if not, aren’t you playing the same political games that Republicans are?

HARRY REID: Listen, Sen. Durbin explained that very well, and he did it here, did it on the floor earlier, as did Sen. Schumer. What right did they have to pick and choose what part of government is going to be funded? It’s obvious what’s going on here. You talk about reckless and irresponsible. Wow. What this is all about is Obamacare. They are obsessed. I don’t know what other word I can use. They’re obsessed with this Obamacare. It’s working now and it will continue to work and people will love it more than they do now by far. So they have no right to pick and choose.

BASH: But if you can help one child who has cancer, why wouldn’t you do it?

REID: Why would we want to do that? I have 1,100 people at Nellis Air Force base that are sitting home. They have a few problems of their own. This is — to have someone of your intelligence to suggest such a thing maybe means you’re irresponsible and reckless –

BASH: I’m just asking a question.

d into saying this. We all know what he meant but it didn't come out that way. The extremely irritating thing is that - this is exactly what the whole issue is about. !!!!! If Republicans weren't trying to repeal Obamacare - millions of people (including kids) could get treatment! But they wouldn't if they had their way. So how dare they and their media lapdogs stand on ceremony about ONE sick child.

    •  And if Reid had simply asked the question (7+ / 0-)

"what are the Republicans offering in return for an Obamacare delay, Bash could have no response except for "to pass a CR"  Which would have turned the entire interview on its head and put the onus back on the fact that R's are holding the Govt hostage.  That is how you successfully propagandize.  Simple, logical, and to the point.  Harry Reid's long answer sounds like waffling.  The idiot masses need things to be in sound bite form.  Thats why the Con consistently beat Dems on messaging.  They are simply much better at keeping it simple and keeping it short.

You are not a typical consumer of news or political information. You consumer more than the typical consumer and you are specifically and most likely (consciously or not) selectively choosing to expose yourself to the noise on the edges of the still constant and primary narrative:

The GOP and the Tea Party do not like Obamacare and have shut done the government in an effort to de-fund Obamacare.

  •  Yeah... (7+ / 0-)

the GOP is totally winning the messaging war.

All the polls bear that out.

    *rolls eyes*

  •  I hear you but the response is pretty well (0+ / 0-)

known.  It goes something like this:  "But we HAVE already compromised!!!  Obamacare is a disaster that the American people don't want and we wanted to defund it and get rid of it.  But we compromised.  We then said that we wanted a one year delay.  But did the Dems compromise?  NO!!!!!  But we then compromised yet again and said that we just wanted Congress and the President to live under Obamacare.  Did the Dems accept?  NO!  Did they negotiate?  NO!!  And you want us to compromise more?  You are out of your mind!"

I can understand where they are coming from and I don't think you are going to get through to "them" by attempting to refute their facts because their "facts" are basically true but entirely out of context.

Obviously there aren't many conservatives that will be willing to hear and accept that the context of the situation but maybe turning the tables would be effective.

So here's an analogous situation.  So imagine that next year we are negotiating over the budget and the most left wing members of the Senate said that unless Congress changed the tax laws that were agreed to last year that they were going to shut down the government.    The left wing Dems' specific demand is that the top marginal rate go back to the time before Reagan.  Would you agree?  Would you compromise a little and meet them half way?  No?  You would stand firm, right?  Ok, so if they Dems then countered and said they would agree to return to the first tax cuts initiated by Reagan, would you agree?  (Some conservatives might actually accept this but those are the idiots that don't know that in Reagans first term the top marginal rate was 50%)  Anyway, would it be the Republicans fault that the government was shut down because they didn't negotiate with the Dems over the top marginal tax rate or would the shut down be rightfully blamed on the Dems for making entirely unreasonable demands when the House of Representatives is still in the hands of the Republicans?"

The analogy is pretty straightforward and the answers are pretty clear, even to a Republican.
