Just a short little something I felt like writing about...

Mark Schauer is actually doing some campaigning in his home town, even though it's in Howell -- pretty much the heart of Metro Detroit-area conservatism these days:

http://www.freep.com/...

Schauer is a product of a heavily conservative community that has been that way for decades.

He said he’s determined to make his case to Livingston County residents that they would be better served under his leadership than Snyder’s, however.

Schauer recognizes he doesn’t fit the conservative mind-set of many local residents.

“I’m not making a prediction on whether we carry the county, but I think we’ll do very well here. It’s sort of the basics,” he said.

I'm happy about this.  I keep thinking about Virg Bernero, who never showed up where he grew up (Waterford) as part of his disastrous MI-GOV campaign.  I think about Al Gore, who could have been POTUS if he won Tennessee (he came within 3%).  I don't expect that they're all going to win on historical home turf, but I'm glad to see the effort.  Like Schauer said -- it's the basics.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

when people would say "freep this poll" I was like, Hm, what does the Detroit Free Press have to do with anything?

I'd like to start a new meme: "No means no" is a misnomer. It should be "Only 'Yes' means yes." Just because someone doesn't say "No" doesn't mean they've given consent. If she didn't say "Yes", there is no consent.

Mark is campaigning in so-called red areas. If not for the gerrymander here, he'd be my Congressman instead of tea party toady Walberg.

You should fill this out a little--someone unfamiliar with MI politics has no idea who or what you're writing about.

enough. He sits with exactly the name recognition, age group and popularity as Mike Rogers, and this county continues to carry Rogers election after election. They deify him. Let's hope that Livingston County feels a little hometown proud for their hometown guy. Sadly, LivCo is loaded with teabaggers. Yes, they hate Lt Gov Calley, but they LURVE them some Snyder.

I thought Snyder wasn't batshit crazy enough for them. When did they stop being pissed about his support for Medicaid expansion?

        •  I knew (0+ / 0-)

they had Calley in the crosshairs, but last I heard they were unhappy with Snyder for playing ball with the hated Feds on the Medicaid expansion, as well as his support for a new Canada bridge, not to mention their ongoing dissatisfaction with his lack of interest in social issues. He's too much of a corporate Republican, rather than a Glenn Beck-inspired true believer.

Even if the voters send him packing and elect Schauer, we still have the Republican gerrymander to contend with--it's theoretically possible for Dems to take the House, but there's virtually no way R's lose the state Senate.

    County?

No Dem candidate for Governor can take those Democratic voters for granted, particularly in these times of Emergency Manager problems and the Detroit bankruptcy fight.
