Want to get a picture of just how out of touch Pat Robertson is? During the "Bring it On" segment of yesterday's 700 Club, he took a question from an elderly woman who is in a real financial pinch due to her husband's medical bills. She and her husband are both retired, and their sole sources of income are a small pension and Social Security. She's tithed all of her life, but wondered if it would be wrong to put money that she normally uses for her tithe and puts it toward her husband's medical bills.
Robertson's response? She should keep tithing--and her husband's medical bills be hanged. No, I'm not kidding--watch here and pile up the dislikes. The woman's question starts at the 3:20 mark.
Robertson says that the reason this woman's husband is sick is that "the devourer"--the devil--hasn't been rebuked from their lives. If they keep tithing, then God will protect them against whoever is "eating up your money and eating up your health."
This is horribly callous, even by Robertson's standards. According to People for the American Way, which first mentioned this, this is par for the course for Robertson. Back in 2011, he told a woman who was finding it hard to pay her mortgage that it was all because she wasn't tithing.
I wonder if Robertson would be brave enough to say this to this woman's face, rather than from the security of his studio in Virginia Beach.
