By now, most readers on DKos have seen the news about the rule change that gives the House Majority Leader the sole privilege of ending the shutdown (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...).
Commenters are right to state that this is a rather egregious example of subverting democracy. However, it seems to me that there would be a couple of ways forward even with the rule change in place. I'd like to get some opinions on the following ideas:
1. A separate resolution be voted on that states the desire of the House to have the Majority Leader bring the clean CR up for a vote. Effectively, this would be a symbolic vote to put Eric Cantor on the hot seat and force him to explain why he's subverting the will of the majority in the House.
2. Temporarily (hell, permanently!) vote for a new House Majority Leader with a coalition of Republicans and Democrats. It could be one of the few reasonably moderate Republicans ... whoever would get enough Republican votes to make a majority with Democrats on the motion and would agree to put the CR up for a vote. I don't know exactly how this would work, but I'm assuming it's possible if an overall majority is behind it.
Does anyone have any comments on the feasibility of either of these ideas?
