So I hear there's been some kind of sporting event on TV recently, a kind of series? I know it's not time for the Olympics yet, so this Bostonian is confused... has anyone else heard about this? Whether you're nodding your head in agreement or staring open-mouthed wondering what rock I've been hiding under, follow me below the dingledoodle squigglie dKosagnocchi dividerthingie fold after a word from our sponsor...

Yes, I'm well aware that the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals are 3-2 in the World Series, with game 6 tomorrow. My local NPR station, music stations, newspaper and Facebook feed make sure I don't miss a thing. Several media sources today covered sleep deprivation of fans, people are sporting beards, and the emcee at a fundraising concert I attended Friday evening gave grateful thanks that there was no game that evening.
I'm not a sports fan usually. I never have been. I don't watch the Big Four and back when I got a physical Boston Globe, the Sports section was what I used first when I needed to line counters or metaphorical birdcages. Sure, when my own kids are involved I'm at the pool or soccer field cheering wildly, able to quote stats and times. The Olympics grab my attention as well, because every four years I get to see sports that are rarely covered on TV.
I suspect there are a lot like me, too. However, when the post-season rolls around they become fair-weather fans waving whatever is this year's I Support The Troops Team object, slogan or haircut. I never mastered that art; of being intensely into supporting something I'll stop thinking about as soon as the last Final Analysis of the event is over.
Don't get me wrong, I have no beef with either year-round or seasonal fans. I'm just not one. In this age of either/or polarization, I somewhat sadly feel obliged to make clear I don't secretly hope the non-home team wins and cover it with a veneer of polite urbanity. It's just... not relevant. And since I don't care for the other 11 months of the year, it seems silly to me to hop on the Fanly Fervor Bandwagon for two weeks and then either celebrate or mourn for the next two.
Are you a full-season fan, someone who catches the fever at playoff time, or are you wondering which season this is (Baseball, Football, Basketball or Hockey being the usual four here in the US, YMMV in other countries :-))? Do share in the comments!
This being a political site (eleventy million cat pictures notwithstanding :-)), it seems I should mention those other fair-weather fans. The ones who notice the sinking ships of candidates, causes and caucuses, flocking like rats to the other, floating, ships. The campaign donors. The political "independents" who if they are blunt honest changes their views because they like to be allied with the winning team. Does it make me a hypocrite to say "I don't care if you're fair-weather, I'll take you on my side as long as you vote"?
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything
without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do
not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
From Tamar:
In a passionate discussion about the problems with the roll-out of the ACA (in stevio's diary), several people suggested firing the staff responsible for the roll-out. sweatyb had a much better suggestion.

Do Something speaks simple truth about negotiating some things, in Laura Clawson's Paul Ryan: Budget negotiations are for cutting federal pensions, not corporate tax loopholes.
