EVERYONE is welcome and please join us each morning at 7:30 AM PACIFIC
to tell us what you're working on, share your show & tell, vent, whatever you want...
...this is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.
What is that secret thing you do?
What is that thing you do? You know, that thing you tend to do when no one else is around and you have no pressing duties. I'm talking about that thing you start doing thinking you'll do it for 15 or 20 minutes, and five hours later you realize you completely lost track of time, your body or your mind has become numb, and you have some kind of a hangover from doing it for too long.
For example, I know Kos loves to ride his bike up in mountain trails and MB takes great joy working with wood. What about you?
I probably have spent more "unassigned" hours creating maps/bitmap images than anything else. I've done them when single, married, drunk, stoned and sober. I've done them for all continents, for all cultures, & for all historical periods. I'm a walking, talking (but hopefully only when prompted) historical atlas. I can recreate with pen and paper inside any elevator the historical borders and neighbors of the Roman Empire for any fifty-year peirod from 200 B.C. up to the Fourth Crusade. With the same pen and paper I can recreate at the drop of a hat the architectural features of fifty ancient Maya cities. The outlines of Turkish Emirates are outlined on my brain. The empires are always rising and falling within my head, and when I need to relax I return to mapping them out....more by impulse than by choice.
Reading doesn't doesn't do it for me, as I find myself constantly engaged re-writing in my mind what my eyes are reading. I enjoy reading, like I enjoy hiking/walking every day, but both are exertions that require will on my part. Maps I do without thinking. I lose myself in them. At night when I try to sleep very often the maps come back to my mind and are slowly replaced with cobblestone streets, plastered pyramids, and bombed-out autobahns.

Let's build communities!
Every region needs a meatspace community like SFKossacks.
We take care of each other in real life.
I urge YOU to take the lead and organize one in your region.
Please tell us about it if you do and we're here for advice.

Asheville, NC gets out the vote!
The following is a brief roundup of the DKos Asheville Voter Registration Project's fourth outing. We've been setting up every Tuesday now for the last four weeks at Earth Fare, a natural food store at Westgate Shopping Center in Asheville. We have a nice spot on the patio outside the store. This time with less people but more snow, freezing weather and a killer wind!
My favorite excerpt from randallt's diary:
Mystery Kossack? You can join DKos Asheville by sending a Kosmail to randallt.
When I was inside getting my pizza, a woman came up to David with a great story. She was recently reading Daily Kos and had seen our pictures from one of our diaries or in the New Day daily post. On her way to the store today she was wondering if she might see us and she did. She was thrilled.
