I have really enjoyed some of the diaries on the recent ‘tiff’ between Liz and Mary Cheney about Mary Cheney’s marriage. I applaud without reservation Mary Cheney’s right to marry, as well as the fact that she did marry the person she loves. Her position on this issue is spot on correct and proper and right and fair and moral and wonderful. Her sister does not ‘just disagree.’

As Mary said:
Liz – this isn't just an issue on which we disagree – you're just wrong – and on the wrong side of history.
(From her
Facebook posting.)
I was encouraged to see that Mary Cheney called her sister out on this, in a very public way, because her sister absolutely IS wrong, and she is also on the wrong side of history. More encouraging, to me, was the thought that Mary Cheney had a concept of what ‘the wrong side of history' might be, what it might mean. Because her political history, with the exception of the issue of marriage equality, is to be with Republicans on the wrong side of history. From what I have read (in her bio on wikipedia, for example), even on marriage equality and fairness, she held her tongue during the Bush Administration. Wasn’t Bush on the wrong side of history, too, Mary? Very troubling, that the end (supporting Dubya) justified the means (being so silent on that injustice, i.e.. being on the wrong side of history for political expediency).
I agree that Liz Cheney is on the wrong side of history, but so are almost all Republicans when it comes to equal rights and fairness across the entire political spectrum. If one does not think one should marry someone of the same sex, then one should not marry someone of the same sex. But that isn’t the way Republicans operate. It isn’t just about one’s own choices, it is about everyone else’s choices, as well. It is about tyranny of the majority, as John Adams used the phrase, as Alexis de Tocqueville used the phrase, about a state where a majority uses the political process to try to beat down and discriminate against a minority. Electoral might makes right.
Tyranny of the majority is wrong, and, not coincidentally, on the wrong side of history. Will her experience of hatred and small-mindedness and discrimination help Mary Cheney ‘see’ better, in our political world? Will it help her understand some of the ways in which Republicans have elevated hatred and discrimination to their very reason for being?
I cannot say that it won’t, but I can say that, at least so far, it hasn’t. In her affiliation with that most vicious of all political parties, Mary Cheney is wrong. And on the wrong side of history. May the scales soon fall from your eyes, Mary, and may a fulfilling and very happy marriage help with that.
On to tonight’s comments! (All of those formatted and posted by brillig!)
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything
without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do
not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
