New Day Grand Canyon Sunrise Banner
Every day is a new day and with that, a new opportunity.
EVERYONE is welcome and please join us each morning at 7:30 AM PACIFIC
to tell us what you're working on, share your show & tell, vent, whatever you want...
...this is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.

What do YOU call that little device
that divides your diary's parts?

I'm a big fan of wordplay and especially neologisms. I've even invented a few myself. The most recent: Nopology. It's the term I apply to those sorry politicians and business critters who start out with something along the lines of "If I offended anyone..." There are no ifs in a genuine apology.

But that's serious and the term is wordplay, meant to be fun. Daily Kos wordplay, even in the midst of very serious political, economic, environmental and social upheaval, is filled with linguistic fun, as one can see in a term like the Boney Mojo, or "Bojo," invented by bubbanomics and added permanently to the site's slang. This goofiness helps maintain our sanity in our crazy world.

One of the arenas of Kossack slangy inventiveness has been active in the past nearly three years is coming up with names for the calligraphic division between introductions and extended versions of diaries. That scribbled little doohickey was added to the site with the arrival of DK4. The designers who added it surely had no idea how much attention it would be given. Many Kossacks have since sought to give it a name that would stick, but none has.

Itzl is one term that caught on for a while. Named for a hearing-assistance dog of a former Daily Kos member, Itzl has been used by AntKat, Catte Nappe, FloridaSNMOM, glendaw271, Ms Citizen, AnnetteK, 4Freedom, zenbassoon, angry marmot, Horace Boothroyd III, OPOL and others.

Technically speaking, the arabesque divider is a dingbat, a typesetter's device that Harlan Ellison discusses and that was first noted by JeffW here.

Others with cachet are Orange de fleur invented by dopper0189 and frenchified as fleur d'orange by chimene. Fleur-de-Kos, invented by former Kossack kafkananda, has also done well.

One thing for certain, it is not, as michelewln diaried early this year, the orange nameless thing. God has fewer names. At least three other diarists have also sought to round up the names that have been attached to the Daily Kos dingbat. These include the Wee Mama's So, what do you call . . . (POLL) (in which she says the divider looks like two squirrels doing it in a sack), Floyd Blue's What do YOU call the Orange Diary Divider Thingy? and, most recently, Seattle Mark's The Great Orange Squiggleorange thingamabob.

DKos Asheville Voter Registration Project, week 5

by randalltfor DKos Asheville

Asheville, NC gets out the vote!

The following is a brief roundup of the DKos Asheville Voter Registration Project's fifth outing. We've been setting up every Tuesday for the last five weeks at Earth Fare, a natural food store at Westgate Shopping Center in Asheville. We have a nice spot on the patio outside the store. This week with no icy wind and much more moderate temps. Oh it was cold alright, just not stupid cold. Back to having three of us was great. LamontCranston, David and Myself received many thumbs up and "thank you's" from passers by and shoppers and more than a few questions as to why we were doing this now. "Didn't we just have an election?". We officially re-registered one voter and took advantage of the interaction to do some Daily Kos evangelism. And here is a tease for next week. It involves llamas!

tmservo433 delivered a great event. Almost 30 people attended what tmservo433 calls the first session of the evening that lasted until 11:30 P.M. The second session of the evening included about ten more people lurking outside the door and some working as hotel staff inside the room. So after the meet-up ended, on-lookers from the hall and hotel service people wanted to talk about what they overheard coming out of the ballroom. For example, the round table discussion about the importance of increasing the minimum wage resonated with the waitstaff and they chimed in about that with strong opinons. A ballroom dancing couple applauded the progressive discussion they could hear on the other side of the partition. This event united progressives within its reach!

Please visit tmservo433's diary for written details on this terrific event! You can join Kansas & Missouri Kossacks by sending a Kosmail to tmservo433.

Your Email has been sent.
You must add at least one tag to this diary before publishing it.

Add keywords that describe this diary. Separate multiple keywords with commas.
Tagging tips - Search For Tags - Browse For Tags

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.
Rescue this diary, and add a note:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from Rescue?
Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

You must be a member of a group to use this feature.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary?
(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?
