The New York Times is offering you -- surprise, surprise -- this suggestion on behalf of the 1%.
In the article, they advise the creation of a permanent guestworker underclass in America, because, you know, immigrants don't event want to become citizens anyway.
Oh. No. You. Fucking. Don't.
Here's a better solution:
Let's give everyone who lives in the U.S. full-time for at least five years automatic and compulsory U.S. citizenship.
You live here?
You own here.
You fulfill your duties as a citizen and you receive the benefits of being one.
The millions -- perhaps tens of millions -- of illegal immigrants in the U.S. serve several useful purposes for the Ownership class.
First, they provide low-cost, unregulated labor that can be exploited for what it is, and drives down the prices that legal residents can charge for work.
Second, it means that the working classes are significantly under-represented in the electorate, which makes sure that working people don't get their full right to participate in government.
Automatic and compulsory citizenship for all residents can fix this.
