Welcome to the Kitchen Table! Once again, I am sharing some films I found on Netflix. Tonight, this being the day after what is probably the biggest eating day of the year, I am putting forward some documentary films on food and health. It is a subject that interests me because my sister and I are seeking to reclaim our health after a long period of stress. We are doing it with the advice of naturepaths -- and eating healthy food (in sensible portions) is a big part of it. So, at the risk of being a buzzkill after the turkey feast, tonight's subject is:
Food and Our Health
Movies after the fold!
Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead
Joe Cross made a lot of money as one of those guys on the floor of the Australian Stock Exchange -- a lucrative but highly stressful life. His lifestyle made him very ill -- he was overweight, suffering from an autoimmune condition that required him to take steriod medication everyday, and physically miserable. His solution? A 60-day juice fast which he did in the heart of the land of fast food, the United States of America. Joe Cross succeeded in reclaiming his health -- and on his journey, he helped some other people, too. Highly inspirational watching!

Food Matters
Let food be your medicine -- Hippocrates said that centuries ago but in a pharmaceutical age, we've strayed from that sound advice. This film, which is as good an introduction to the idea of functional medicine as you will find, will inspire you to think about what you eat and also to question the conditions under which our food is produced by agribusiness. Watch the trailer, you'll want to see the whole film.

Frankensteer
I wouldn't advise watching this film while eating because the conditions under which cattle are kept and slaughtered are stomach turning -- not to mention descriptions of the hormones and drugs they are given. But, even though this film depicts the cattle industry in Canada, it is important watching because the same thing is going on in the U.S. -- and it is an environmental disaster as well as a health disaster. Inform yourself.

Killer at Large
The killer at large explored by this film is obesity. Our country is in the middle of an obesity epidemic -- and it is actually a threat to our national security. The health care costs due to all our extra poundage is immense -- and so is the suffering. The Big Dawg himself, former President Bill Clinton, makes an appearance in this film, having reformed his diet after heart disease nearly claimed his life. Ready for some resolutions? I am. This is important viewing.
