Pope Francis is saying that fundamentalist/extremist religion is "an illness"...

I can hear the whining already...and I can not believe I am agreeing with a Pope!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Looks like Pope Frankie just triggered a new FundyFreakout, and renewed their war on the Catholic Church (they aren't Christians you know)...

  •  Probably a good call by the (3+ / 0-)

new Pope.  Not sure if it's specifically clinical, but grounds for a healthy chat just the same.

I'm guessing Francis was talking about the hyper-reactive distortions of Biblical text, but on the other hand he might have just been thinking of the way Rick Warren dresses on a daily basis.

that I like what this pope has to say. For a change it seem the pope is making sense and addressing many of the real problems that the world is facing. Hopefully it does some good especially when it comes to the foolishness that often passed for religion by so many of the fundamentalist on the right who seem to believe that hate and greed are what Christ taught!

We get lectured on religious behavior by the top representative of an institution whose spread across the world was a result of massacres, crusades, inquisitions and other lovely tecniques to "share the good news".

And now that the world has finally put a lid on the overt behavior of the RCC, it continues to conquer through economic/political rampages against the rights of women, gays, children etc. etc.

If any institution represents right wing fanatical/extremism, it is the RCC and it's new "smooth talking doing no walking" pope.

You do know that WE know that religious fanaticism (like other fanaticisms) is a mental illness..., right?

It takes one to know one about fanatic religions, doesn't it, Frankie?  Are you remembering the RCC's Inquisition, witchcraft trials, the burnings at the stake, torture over religious belief, the imposition of religious belief via government force of law?  The latter is the very reason many of our early American ancestors arrived on these shores (my own ancestors were among them), and why some of them turned around and tried to do the same as had been done to them with the resulting cruel excesses, which is why the Founding Fathers who remembered their recent history rejected government control of religion and made sure the US Constitution separated church and state in the first place.  The fact that Dumbya created the unconstitutional and illegal 'office of faith-based institutions' to be run out of the White House and Obama has taken it over and expanded it must make James Madison roll in his grave.

The purpose of separation of church and state is to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe with blood for centuries.
~ James Madison, 4th President of the US, and one of the principal architects of the US Constitution
Frankie, Frankie, Frankie.... Still no mention of turning pedophile priests over to law enforcement to be tried for their crimes, eh?  What are you gonna do about the fanatic pedophiles and sex criminals and rapists among your own clergy instead of merely pointing out the obvious fanaticism in other religions?  Why are you protecting the criminals within your own clergy?  You're just begging for an old-time religious war that involves governments like the RCC used to do centuries ago at the urging of popes, aren't you?  Especially since the governments doing the attacking are paying for the military costs involved because they increase taxes to the people who don't want war and can least afford a tax increase to fight religious wars.

What about women's reproductive rights and making decisions about their own bodies, Frankie?  Why is it so important for you and your (usually male) fanatic co-religionists to insist you have the right to control women's bodies and minds and you want laws made along those lines to further control women?  Women are not farm animals (or slaves) whose bodies you can control with any validity.  Over-population puts a strain on the environment.  If women want to go to Zero Population Growth (which was a valid concept when I was young), then STFU about birth control and/or abortion.  If you can get preggers and give birth, then you might have a valid claim for what to do with your own body and decisions made thereof.  Otherwise, when it comes to women's bodies, STFU.

Oh, "Dear Frankie," clean up your own house first before you start pointing out the obvious fanaticism and other hypocrisies that we already know about, especially misogyny-by-rule-of-law that the reichwingnuts (and RCC) support, because Moronic Media continues to invite and allow so-called religious persons to comment in political shows where they imply, or outright say, laws should be made according to their religious views.  You're just like Obama that way.  You use a lot of condescending words that sound very good because the sentences are grammatically correct..., but there's no substance behind your words.  Pointing out obvious things that are wrong without also suggesting a solution - starting with your own church! - is hypocritical in the extreme.  Put up or shut up.  You're making a fool of yourself.  Stop it.
