For thousands of years, artists have been making three-dimension images of animals in a variety of different media. Shown below are a few of the animal sculptures which I recently encountered in the Portland (Oregon) Art Museum.
The bronze sculpture of the hawk shown above was done by an unknown Japanese artist during the Meiji Period (1868-1912).
The Lion-Dogs shown above once guarded the entrance to a Shinto or Buddhist Shrine in Japan. The dogs are an imaginary hybrid of a lion and a mastiff.
