The House Majority PAC will be responding to months-long attacks by the Koch brother's Americans for Prosperity against Reps. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-AZ) and Ron Barber (D-AZ), spending $200,000 to begin countering the $650,000 AFP has spent against them.

In Barber’s district, HMP is launching an ad attacking his likely Republican opponent, retired Air Force colonel and 2012 nominee Martha McSally, as a proponent of the “reckless agenda” pushed by the Kochs.

AFP has already spent something like $3.5 million against Democrats in eight House districts, including these two, with ads that started back in October. House Majority PAC raised $7.5 million in 2013, and will use it primarily to counter Koch attacks around the country. Andy Stone, the PAC's spokesperson, told Politico, "House Majority PAC is committed to combating the efforts of the Koch Brothers and their right-wing allies, who are already stepping up to spend unprecedented sums in House races to promote their reckless agenda."

    the money being spent now, I have one thing to say.

    Jerry Brown.

    Remember, he got outspent by tons in the gov race, and didn't even run any ads for ages.

    I seem to remember a bunch of people here going nuts because he wasn't doing anything.

    People forget ads that are run a YEAR before the election.

      manipulating public discourse today goes beyond a single election. They are owning the conversation and defining the issues. This puts democrats in a totally reactive position and that is never, ever a winning strategy.

        to the extent that anybody even listens to it.

        And frankly, not many do.

        We think everybody is paying attention to all the stuff we are - but the vast majority aren't.

        People have gotten very good about ignoring a lot of stuff. They might half grasp something on background, but that assumes they see it in the first place - and again, whole swaths of the population won't.

        If I see your ad, or hear it in the background, and it says the same thing over and over, and then 3 wks before the election I hear something NEW, I'm going to remember the new thing, not the thing I've already forgotten and ignore because I've heard it a thousand times.

        I think the biggest thing we ignore is the weight people give to what celebrities say - whether the celebrity knows anything about the subject or not.

        People pay attention to a familiar and well known face/voice, even if it isn't connected with that subject.

        This is why advertisers pay big bucks for those known voices - people recognize and listen to them.

        Most of those known voices, especially the ones with faces that are well known as well, tend to lean D.

        in the general, but this district needs new , strong candidates. AZ candidates  and the Democratic machinery
        seem achingly slow to get  things in motion.

        I want a Democrat to win in each of these districts. Period.

        But Barber and Kirkpatrick (and Sinema, though she is not the focus of this article) have been casting some truly horrible votes, in my opinion. Very corporate, Third Way Democrat- type votes.I have been very unhappy with all three of them, to put it mildly.  

        I'll support Kirkpatrick against the Kochs and against Republicans, but I wish either she would support more progressive positions or we had a more progressive candidate.

        (and before anyone starts screaming she would not be electable if she did so, I know that at least in Sinema's district, she ran as more progressive than she has voted. Barber's district includes Tucson, I think, and is more left than he is. I admit I could be wrong about these facts, though. I would definitely do more research before I donated or voted for these candidates to make sure I am not wrong.)

          those horrible votes were sort  of useless, from my perspective.  Barber in particular has really confounded people who fought hard for him, in an attempt to gain credibility , and with who? conservatives in this district? they will never vote for him anyway.
           maybe he is  trying to please the military voters in Tucson and Sierra Vista?
           the only thing he has going for him right now is that, (if McSally is his opponent), a lot of people on the left as well as the center and the right do not like Martha McSally. McSally's negatives and Barber's moderation did drive some votes his way last time,and some conservatives did vote for Barber because they felt he was centrist and they just despised McSally. but what % of the district is  that? i don't know.  if McSally has polished her act,  I think Barber  will have a tough road, as he has really let down a lot of progressives as well as traditional  Democrats who turned out for him last time.
          he has made some decent votes, but the stinkers were very high profile ,morale ripping stinkers.
          Kirkpatrick's votes haven't been as bad, but it seems as if she is a very weak campaigner..i don't follow her as closely, and Sinema, ...not impressed with Sinema since she was elected.

          taking of the ACA, Sinema's irritating press releases all seemed to say 'hey everybody, i'm going out of my way to work across the aisle and cooperate with, (read: get approval from) the assholes"

    for the last several months.  Haven't seen any of the Barber ads because he has no consituents in the Phoenix area, unlike Kirkpatrick.  Most of the ads tar Kirkpatrick for her support of the ACA and call for its repeal.  I don't know how Americans for Prosperity got a tax exemption because their ads are highly political.

    Since the ACA is not going to be repealed (even Republicans are coming to that conclusion) the ads are a direct attack on Kirkpatrick and Barber, hiding under the guise of an "issues" ad.

    I'm glad to see that there is going to be some pushback.  For four months these ads have been running unanswered, and both Kirkpatrick and Barber are in districts that can swing either way.  Right now there are five out of nine Congressmen from AZ who are Democrats.  

    Next step is to dump McCain.  The problem we currently have is finding a Democrat with some name recognition to run against McCain (and compete for governor and other top state offices).

    Arizona, like Texas, has a large and growing population of Latinos and young people, two demographics that Republicans have gone out of their way to dismiss.  Same thing for New Mexico.  If the Republicans lose any of these states they will be a permanent regional party of the South.

    You need to include a transcript of this ad in the story. It changes the picture completely.

    The focus of the ad is the 'disastrous Obamacare website'. Not only is this not countering the garbage being spewed by Koch, it is playing into it.
