As Meatloaf once said in song "I would do anything for love, but I won't do that."
Now embattled former Gov Bob McDonell is singing that song to wife Maureen.
It has now come out that Bob McDonnell was offered a deal: Plead guilty to one felony count and we will drop all the other charges against you and all of the charges against your wife. McDonnell refused the offer. Now, it could just mean that the McDonnells believe that the government has a weak case. Or it could be that Maureen pleaded with Bob not to take the fall for her. Maureen previously told prosecutors that she felt responsible for the improper relationship with Jonnie R. Williams and that her husband was innocent. But, think about it. No trial, probably minimal jail time if any. It's all over and done with and forgotten. And he turned it down.
OK, I'm not married, so I'm not speaking from any knowledge, but guys, would you consider a deal like this in the same circumstances? Prosecutors were willing to drop all charges against Maureen but now she is going to be dragged into court and have witness after witness go on the stand describing her excesses in great detail, all of which will be splashed all over the evening news. If found guilty she will be facing jail time for multiple counts and I doubt the judge will be in a forgiving mood. I mean, wouldn't you want to save your wife from that? She didn't kill anybody, she just spent like a drunken sailor with somebody else's money. She made you look bad, but now-a-days that's no big deal. If anything McDonnell would look like a hero to some: Going to jail to protect his wife. Instead, we all get to watch the million-dollar train-wreck unfold. Not that I'm complaining, but it just seems odd.
