When John Boehner decided to kill immigration reform for the rest of the year, the bullshit excuse he used was that the GOP didn't trust that President Obama would enforce the law fairly. Well, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who is leading the negotiations in Congress, said he's
willing to wait until President Obama is gone:
"Let's enact the law this year, but simply not let it actually start until 2017, after President Obama's term is over," he said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "Now I think the rap against him that he won't enforce the law is false -- he's deported more people than any other president -- but you could actually have the law start in 2017 without doing much violence to it."
...
"It's been a tough week for immigration," he said. "But all three, many of the Republicans have said the following -- Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Paul Ryan, even Jim DeMint -- they have said that they want to do immigration reform, but they don't trust the President to enforce the law, particularly the enforcement parts. So there's a simple solution."
Nice and tidy. No President Obama, no excuses.
But rest assured, this new proposal will not move immigration reform forward because in truth the opposition from the GOP has nothing to do with President Obama. It is because the GOP base is white and racist and that same base does not want any more people of color becoming full-fledged Americans. Especially if they start voting for Democrats. But at the very least, with Schumer saying he is perfectly willing to let the law take effect after President Obama is gone, the GOP cannot blame the president in an attempt to cover up their own bigotry.
