Climate change is real -- there's no more debating the science. And yet, when a child goes to school each morning, her parents can't be entirely sure that actual science is what she'll learn.
11 states around the country have introduced legislation to force public schools to teach climate-science denial -- and it's already become law in four of them. This is all thanks to ALEC, which many Daily Kos readers will know as the right-wing legislation factory funded by major corporations like ExxonMobil and even Google.
ALEC's 2014 agenda is even worse. Flush with an influx of cash from new member Google, they've pledged to fight for more dirty coal, attack the EPA, and target clean energy standards.
Google needs to feel more pressure about ALEC -- and we have a big opening if we act now. A group of shareholders has introduced a resolution demanding full disclosure of Google's financial ties to right-wing lobbyists, but they need you to get their backs.
Sign the petition to Google's shareholders today: Demand that Google quit ALEC and disclose all lobbyist ties immediately!
Google will formally respond to the resolution this spring, so we need to be sure their resolution has as many supporters as possible. This petition is an open letter to the rest of Google's investors, asking them to join the cause.
ALEC isn't the only climate-science denier group Google's been funding. They've also given money to Heritage Action, the Koch-backed PAC that pushed the tea party to shut down the government, and the "Competitive Enterprise Institute," a libertarian think tank known for bullying climate scientists. Google even hosted a fundraiser for Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK), perhaps the biggest climate-science denier in Congress!
Google clearly needs to disclose its growing ties to right-wing lobbyists -- but, with tentacles in every single state legislature, ALEC is still the most powerful climate-science denier of all. That's why last year, over 230,000 Americans -- including 86,000 from the SierraRise community -- demanded that Google stop funding the organization. Privately, their senior executives say they're paying close attention to our efforts. But so far their official position is still "no comment," so it's time we double down and hit them where it hurts: with their investors.
Sign the petition to Google's shareholders today -- Google needs to feel pressure about ALEC and climate-science denial from both the grassroots AND their investors!
