U.S. Representative Pete Sessions (R-TX) tells reporters the House will not be voting on any budget or debt ceiling measures that night as he departs the U.S. Capitol in Washington, October 15, 2013. Stop-start negotiations to end the U.S. fiscal impasse left congressional leaders and President Barack Obama desperately searching on Tuesday for a way to reopen the government and raise the country's debt limit ahead of a Thursday deadline. House Republicans are talking about bringing an unemployment insurance extension for a vote, but it definitely won't be the bipartisan Senate bill. While that was crafted to meet the demands of several Senate Republicans, it doesn't contain nearly enough poison pills to make House Republicans happy. It's not clear yet what they'll be looking for to tie to jobless aid and they're not in any hurry to get specific, but they seem to have plenty of ideas:
House Rules Chairman Pete Sessions of Texas and other senior Republicans are pushing proposals to tie the extension of emergency unemployment insurance to jobs measures and the extension of some tax breaks in an attempt to bring the plan to the House floor. [...]

Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Ill., chief deputy whip and a senior tax writer, said no decision had been reached on add-ons, but that some lawmakers were floating ideas. “There’s a lot of discussion of merging UI to this or to that, energy and other things,” Roskam said.

Great. House Republican energy plans (drill! Keystone XL!) and House Republican jobs plans (tax breaks for businesses! Keystone XL!) in exchange for a short-term extension of unemployment aid that will be almost entirely retroactive by the time they're done taking recess and coming up with a list of demands. Still, the fact that they're even talking about putting forward any unemployment extension is a sign that they're feeling some pressure.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

the reserve army of unemployed/underemployed labor

    Reserve army of labour

It refers to the unemployed and under-employed in capitalist society. It is synonymous with "industrial reserve army" or "relative surplus population", except that the unemployed can be defined as those actually looking for work and that the relative surplus population also includes people unable to work. The use of the word "army" refers to the workers being conscripted and regimented in the workplace in a hierarchy, under the command or authority of the owners of capital.

Then maybe the House can re-pass their original bill and send it back to the Senate, and we can rinse and repeat until Reid and Boner decide to drop trou and decide who has the bigger member.

All the while the people who desperately need the benefits can take solace in the fact the House and Senate are playing games with eachother rather than trying to help them.

I hate Boner and the Republican House, but they aren't going anywhere so we need to be trying to focus on things that can actually pass both Houses and provide relief to those that desperately need it.

We want a UI extension, it is likely going to take giving up something they want as a means of getting it. Otherwise we are no different than them if we stick to the "it has to be our bill or no bill" line of thinking while people are suffering needlessly.

KXL will provide about 10 jobs. Yup, until it bursts from sheer greed , the Koch bros. will make vast money, and they won't pay taxes on it either. Sucking the earth of its very blood and selling it to you and me for a ficticious "lifestyle" is how they roll, and not paying taxes is because they are superior in the monetary way, so, that's natural.

I swear these KXL pimps are all snorting Koch.

  •  Gawd, Keystone Is Such a Blunder - (0+ / 0-)

Years ago Obama could have gotten huge concessions from the GOP - employment programs, comprehensive safety not only for Keystone but for other energy industries, severance taxes.

Polls have consistently shown the public anywhere from 2-to-1 to 3-to-1 in favor. And the Senate Dem majority is likely to be impacted, as well.

Instead of getting the most in compromise, Obama and the Dems are going to get little to nothing.

A materialist analysis within the left has been abandoned to extreme culturalism. And working people are quite aware.
