Occupy Activist Cecily McMillan, facing seven years in jail was 'promoter of non-violence' by Jon Swaine New York theguardian.com Monday 7 April 2014

Cecily; who is 25-years old, is charged with felony assault of a police officer. If convicted, she could face up to seven years in prison.

The conflict began when an undercover police officer grabbed her right breast.

Cecily suffered a seizure when she was knocked unconscious by the police during the 6 month anniversary of the occupation of Zuccotti Park.

Cecily's attorney, Martin R. Stolar, describes her as an innocent person and says no crime was committed in this incident.

"In my view, as an attorney, it sounds like the wise thing for the prosecutor to do would be to drop all charges against Cecily McMillan.  The case hinges on the arresting officer and if he can not testify because of credibility problems, the case should not be pursued.  And, even if the facts are as they have been reported there is no crime to prosecute."

Gearing Up For Cecily's Trial!

Yes, we do take this violation of our Constitutional Rights, very seriously!

Supporters of Cecily, are calling on activists and friends to #PackTheCourts and serve as witnesses each day of the proceeding.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

    helps to pack that courtroom.

So far there has been too little justice for Cecily. I hope her day in court changes that.

This may be a faint hope, but if DeBlasio has any sense, he will seize the initiative and use it as a public relations opportunity to exercise executive clemency. Perhaps an appeal to the Mayor's office might help leverage such an action.

I haven't seen you around for at least a week. I always look for you.

I get around. Even when I have a new diary. I like to read other people's diaries and comment with them.

(I accidentally stumbled on this story over on facebook last weekend). They beat up an Irish-person on St Patrick's Day! Got me even madder.

I've seen good cops and I've seen bad cops and I've seen a lot of Occupy Videos where Occupiers have been brutalized.

I know; this cop grabbed Cecily (unprovoked, from behind) and started doing judo moves on her. Like a football tackle maneuver. What a monster he is!

And he's like, three times Cecily's size in height and body mass/weight.

We taxpayers pay for his exercise fitness training too. Keep him buff; to attract, or if they know him repel, the ladies?

It is ridiculous, that they're even trying this case.

At least the Judge has finally decided that; Cecily's lawyer will be allowed to ask, about the cop's previous disciplinary actions.

One for ticket fixing and another about injuring another Occupier the same night as Cecily. It's all in the links.

It's so obvious to anyone, that when the cop grabbed Cecily from behind.

It was in a certain kind of self defense hold, that pulled Cecily's arms upward. Then another cop runs up and cuffs you. Makes it easy to get the person's hands in the air.

I've seen it done; many times, on cop shows, tv, movies, etc.

This cop was a brute and he didn't care.

These are not real NYC Cops. I doubt if any of them are very long on the force. Or, they're related to someone.

Lucky this (cop?) didn't grab me, I'm so little he would have broke me in half.

You don't get bruises like Cecily has without blunt force trauma. ie hitting, pressure, etc! It's all on video.

These cops are so incompetent. They're carrying/dragging, an obviously, injured girl without a backboard!

By that point, an ambulance should have been called.

This is loud you might want to turn your sound down.

bloomberg was a madman and a dictator! But he's gone now.

Things will be much better will Bill De Blasio as Mayor.

      Glad to see you Ruby♥

Any judge or jury who sees this will see that they jerked her up after saying she has a broken rib. It infuriates me.

Thanks, rebel ga for your intrepid reporting.

It looks like Cecily's having the convulsions the entire time too.

Also; proper emergency procedure, is to put injured people in a neck brace and on a back-board immediately. Before moving them.

The entirely brutal treatment of our Occupy Protesters, has been a surreal experience in how far politicians will go.

It's a real wake up call to us on the East Coast, as we haven't seen this kind of blatant abuse of power by big business, in many years!

The cops never beat people up in NYC before and there have been lots of protests and demonstrations there.

NYC Cops saved my life several times back in the sixties and seventies. No exaggeration.

All the rich-banker prospective jurors want to send her to jail because they are for "law and order".  (OK, forget about financial crimes.)  This is why the majority of women do not go to the police after they have been beaten and raped.

    •  the rich-banker prospective jurors, (0+ / 0-)

all got themselves excused from the trial. They don't want to lose a days pay. With their salaries; juror compensation pay would be, about the cost of lunch.

I saw that article in the Guardian, during my research.
