Hi!  I'm Carmen (Waving to everybody!)!  I am stranded in the middle of Michele Bachmann territory and I'm about the only Democrat here (Whoops!  I lie.  My hubby is one too!).  I somehow found this site a few months ago and started getting the daily e-mails.  I've been reading them most every day.  I'd be dying to answer the posts, but found I couldn't, because you have to join the site.  Talk about frustrating!!  I thought about joining, but here's the thing.  I didn't know if I really wanted to join a site where you're expected to blog and stuff like that ('cause I'm not the worlds greatest writer!  Can ya tell?! ).  But alas, I could stand it no longer and I finally caved.  I joined so I could alienate people, probably make a GYNORMOUS fool of myself and stick my foot in my mouth, all on a global scale (you all are global, right?)!

Anyhoo, that's enough about me.  The reason I'm writing this, my very first diary BTW (YAY!), is because I'm kind of flummoxed about something here and it involves the ADS.  You know, those pesky little bastards that keep coming back to haunt you after you've left their site.  You know, for that site you don't want your husband to know you were on (No honey, I am not buying more stuff for my truck!!  Geez!), so you quick slam the laptop shut so he doesn't see?!  Yeah, those things.  Well, I'm not a paying member (sorry, I can't afford it right now.  I know, BOO!), so I still get all the ads popping up on my screen.  Now, correct me if I'm wrong (which I am a lot, surprisingly), but I was under the impression that this is a progressive, Dem. oriented site and that's why this was kind of a big shocker to me.

Please follow me below the orange thingy-mac-doo-hickee and I'll tell you more about the what, why and everything else, ok?

Ok, there I was, sitting here reading someone's blog a few weeks ago, when up pops an ad for Al Franken.  This ad says he's against free speech and "You should sign our petition to stop him" and yeah, whatever.  Well, that made me do a double take.  I mean, I live in Minnesota, I voted for Al and I know he is not against free speech.  As a matter of fact, I get his newsletter and e-mails regularly and he's a strong supporter of free speech!  So, I went to the website for "American Encore", the um, "Company" who put out this petition and who are running a companion ad on TV with the same message.  Of course, when I check out their website, it's basically filled with nothing.  Ok then, off to Google I go to get some more info. on these shady buggers.  And what do you suppose I found, hmmm?!  I find a story from the Wall Street Journal telling me all about the new attack ads against Al Franken and about how "American Encore" is just a sham company for those two bastards, the Koch Bros.!  Shocking I know, right?  NOT!!

So my point is this; If this a progressive, Dem. site, why is the Daily Kos taking ads from companys (and I use THAT term loosely) sponsored by the Koch dork Bros?  That's kind of counter to what the site is all about, right?  Also, I know that the Keystone XL pipeline is a big topic here and that most people are against it.  But yet not 5 minutes ago, there was an ad, right here in my face (I need ads-be-gone!), telling me how great it is and how WONDERFUL the stupid thing would be.  And  that we need it here now, blah, blah, blah.  How is this possible?  Am I just dumb?  Does the site check the ads before they run them or are they just random and the site has no say as to what appears here?  I truly would like to know, 'cause I really don't know!  It's really been bugging the heck out of me these last few days and I just gotta know!  So if anyone knows, please spill the beans so I can rest easier!

Alright.  I guess I've spouted off enough for my first foray into the blogosphere.  Like I said;  1) I have no clue what the hell I'm doing,  2) I can't write to save my life and  3) I've probably bored you all to tears.  If someone ACTUALLY reads this, I want to say you: ARE YOU CRAZY??  I'm kidding of course.  I'd really like to say, if someone does read this, thanks for making it to the bottom without falling asleep, tossing your computer out the nearest window, zapping me with the permanent ban button thing or whatever else people do here to get rid of people like me.

Well Daily Kos people, I gotta say, I'm very glad to make your acquaintances and hopefully, no one lost their lives because of me.  :D

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Yes, DailyKos DOES have puzzles! Visit us here Saturday nights @ 5:00 PDT (easier puzzles) and Sunday nights @ 5:00 PDT (more challenging) for a group solving. Even if you just pop in and comment while watching the fun, everybody is welcome. uid:21352

would be to click through all the crap ads so we cause the right-wing to fund dear old Dailykos to the max? Sounds like fun until it makes your eyeballs bleed.

        •  Hi Carmen (18+ / 0-)

Most of the people here are very friendly, helpful, courteous, kind, so if you have questions ask and they will be answered.

We tend to think of ourselves as a community and take care of our own so from time to time people will ask you generically to do stuff, sign a petition, contribute a few bucks to a cause, but mostly they just read and sometimes write about whatever they find interesting and informative..

As with your posting a diary on ads, you quickly discover lots of other people have the same questions no matter what you write about so its good to use tags.

I went to college in MN in the sixties and somehow managed never to find anyone I would describe as living in Michele Bachmann country, so I guess things must have changed some.

          •  Hey rktect! Nice to meet you. (23+ / 0-)

OH DUDE!!  You were here in the 60's?!  Well, so was I (grew up in Minneapolis)!  It wasn't like this until the 80's, when that Jackass of all Jackasses, Reagan got into office.  And it's just been going down hill ever since.

Do you know where St. Cloud is?  That's smack dab in the middle of NUTSVILLE and unfortunately for me, where I live now.  It is such a hole, you can't imagine.  The only saving grace is that they have an "Electric Fetus" store here and it's all TRUE BLUE on up in there!  I just go there to get my brain cells back, cause trust me, dealing with these morons burns them up like nobody's business!!  What I can't understand is how they can buy all this bullshit?  It just boggles the mind!!  It must be the air or something around here and thank gawd, if it is, it hasn't got me yet!  At least I think it hasn't.  I haven't turned into a brain-dead yokel yet ( the zombie apocalypse is here already!)!  I'm still a Minneapolis girl!  BTW, did you go to the U?  Cause well, Go Gophers!!  (I had to say it.  They make you say it if you went there for any amount of time now, so...)  :D

Anyhoo...Yeah, they've already been hitting me up for my signature and donations and stuff.  They were doing that before I "really" joined, when I was just being a troll (I think that's what ya call it anyway when you just hang out in the background kinda creepy like), when all I could do was read....  That doesn't bother me at all.  My Mom raised a little activist, ME!  So, I have no problem supporting causes.

And, OMG!  Everybody's been so nice!  I've been pretty much in awe of you guys since I first started reading the blogs.  I'm just floored at how much everybody knows and damn if I know where to find all the stuff you guys blog about!  Some of the stuff I'd never heard of!  Geez, I'm so not worthy!! HEE-HEE!  And trust me, I never have a problem asking a question.  It's getting me to shut up that's the problem!  :D

Thanks again for the warm welcome!

            •  I hung out in the Twin Cities (0+ / 0-)

More St Paul than Minneapolis, except for we would go to Big Als back in the days of Governor Rolvag. St Cloud is where I used to take a right turn headed for Bemidji where you could go fishing starting out with a boat full of beer and coming back with a boat full of walleyed pike.

I got snowbound in a bar in Rice for three days coming back from a Thanksgiving Holiday. Rice is just a little ways up route 10 from St. Cloud.

Back in the sixties most of the people I met had a passion for playing bridge and thought Hubert Humphrey was wonderful and Reagan if they thought of him at all was some washed up movie actor famous for playing "Bedtime for Bonzo" with a chimp as his costar, and some western series called "Death Valley Days"

You were a lurker not a troll. Lurkers are readers waiting for something worth writing about. Trolls have big ugly noses and live under bridges from where they stick their noses into other peoples business hijacking threads and pulling unwary travelers and passers by down into a long chain of sensible answers to their moronic comments until they get tired of it and go back to lurking.

As you can tell most of us agree with the following comment by GAS so do indeed keep up the good work.

troll just popped out onto my computer!  I'm definitely NOT a troll, they are ICKY!  I was a "lurker" cause I couldn't comment on anything, and it drove me nuts!  So, now I know how they get people to sign up for this site!  Tempt them with all these great diaries and then when they want to comment, BAZAM!!  "We're sorry.  You cannot comment if you are not a member of our club.  Thank you and have a marvy day!"  Ok, they didn't say that, but it was implied!!  So I had to sign up and put my two cents in and now, you're all stuck with me!  YAY!  :)

Oh yeah, people here still think Humphrey's the bomb, I think most people here thought Reagan was an idiot (he was!) and I know exactly where Rice is.  We'd drive up HWY. 10 to get to my Grandparents cabin in Brainerd and we'd pass it.  Never been to Bemidji though.  The farthest north I've been is Hibbing (not a real happenin town, I tell ya), but we hit Duluth/Two Harbors a lot since my In-laws live there.  And I grew up in Minneapolis, but don't know a lot of St. Paul.  Although I do know Highland Park really well (the Ford Plant area?) since it's right across the river from Minnehaha Falls and we'd hang out there.  My Mom lived in St. Paul when she was a kid.  I get lost every time I go over there.  I swear the streets were laid out by a bunch of drunks!  I try not to go there by myself cause I'm afraid I won't find my way out!

            •  Welcome (0+ / 0-)

I like your writing style.  It's informal and, I'm sure, sounds just like you, which I'd call funny and smart and not cocky.  So welcome, young lady, I don't know as much as the diarists either----don't let that bother you.  And I still don't know what some of the long lists of letters mean.  I'm stuck on n/t, to be honest.  Somebody said there was an FAQ for that, but damned if I can find it.
Settle in and speak your piece/peace.  We'll enjoy hearing from you, and we will send sympathy or empathy for where you live.  I'm lucky enough to live in a Blue State, so I have sympathy for you.  Hang in there.  Surely someday the the folks who have their heads stuck in the Teapot will figure out they're voting against themselves.

              •  Whew! I thought I was the only one that (0+ / 0-)

didn't know what n/t means.  I've been wondering.

Thank you for your sympathy.  I can't wait until the evil that is Michele Bachmann is GONE!!  You'd think after all the times she was proven to be lying or screwing he constituents, that she'd be voted out.  But these people are just as ignorant and stupid as the granite this city's nicknamed for (no offense to granite BTW.).

It's funny, but I never knew there was a Red, Bible Belt in MN until I moved to St. Cloud.  I grew up in Minneapolis which is big time BLUE.  I mean, I knew there were pockets of Red out there, but nothing like these dingbats!  Needless to say, I try to get out of town as much as possible, just to keep my sanity!  And the good thing is, the news here all comes from the cities, so it's not wingnut city every time you turn on the TV or pick up a paper, unless you want to call the St. Cloud Times a paper, which I wouldn't.

My Dad was killed in Vietnam when I was 5. Don't talk to me about "Duty to my Country". I have NO duty to my Country, they took my Dad.

    •  Some are truly deplorable and disgusting. There (50+ / 0-)

is one that is meant to look like a grotesquely infected vagina. And many of the ad/stories using shock, use women as the subject. There is a sexist story below the diary right now that I see. It shows a young attractive woman with her mouth and part her face masked, but her large breasts of course were exposed as much as possible. Those are just some examples.

It's an insult and some of the ads/memes encourage what we as liberals/feminists fight against daily. Something should be done. The news groups should get together and demand filters from Google/Ad Sense.

One time I wrote a tragic story about a 7-year muslim girl who died on her wedding night - to a 40-year old man. He basically tore her up and it was one of the most painful stories I've ever covered. The article was published and then showed up with an ad for a muslim dating site to find women. I asked the publisher to remove the ad on that one story and they chose not to - so I had to story pulled altogether, as I felt I was dishonoring that little girl's death.

I just think we can do better than this.

Thank you so much for the diary. We need for this discussion to happen.

      •  Wow...thank you for your reply. :) (12+ / 0-)

I never knew my one little question, that I thought was kinda dumb actually, would be read more than once!  I'm glad I didn't know who else to ask!  It also gave me an excuse to get off my butt and write my first posting (I'd been dreading it).  :P

I totally agree with you about the way the ads are primarily aimed at men.  I guess the figure if the go for the sex with less self-control, they might get more ad hits?  No.  It's more due to the fact that there aren't enough women in the upper levels of marketing, advertising, etc.  That "Glass ceiling" and all.  And that's sad.  And what's funny, is women spend the money in a household, not the men!  You'd think they'd want to gear it towards us, wouldn't you.  There's still that backwoods Neanderthal mentality going on, even in 2014.

I also wanted to say, that story about the girl you wrote the blog about, even though I didn't read it, it still just broke my heart.  I just sat here and cried for about 10 minutes.  I just cannot fathom how someone could:  1) Give away their daughter like that, like she's nothing.  And,  2) Do something that horrid to a girl that young and call it "normal" and right.  There is nothing "normal or right" about it and then they have the nerve to say it's part of God's law?  What a load garbage!  It's pathetic and evil and I can't see any real religion condoning that.

You're so right, we can do better than this.  We are better than this.

Oh, I forgot to say thank you for clarifying this for me too.  I didn't really know who else to ask so I figured I'd just write a post and maybe someone would read it and then let me know.  But now I see, a lot of somebodys have read it and I'm just like, WOW!  Shocked is the only word I can think of at the moment.

the site doesn't control the ads. Really.
Not doubting you, just curious as to who actually controls the ads.

      •  I think the ads (8+ / 0-)

are powered by Google. Can't say for sure: elfling and kos probably know.

Before an angel bought me a lifetime subscription here, I used to see a lot of ads for the GOP candidates I was planning to put out to pasture by voting against them.

Having to look at their ugly mugs everytime I came to this site was...well, I wanted to puke, frankly.

So my surmise is this: Google knows your search history and where you live and whoever pays the most (hint: GOP/Koch bros.) gets the ad placement.

dKos has no control over it, and needs the money b/c really, blogs aren't cash cows.

      •  Well, truthfully? An algorithm. (10+ / 0-)

Nearly all internet ads are served by systems like Google Adwords. A site owner ads code to their site allowing Google to serve ads into a specific block on a page.

The ads are "chosen" based on keywords -- both the keywords on the website, and the keywords the advertiser agrees to pay for.

So, if I were buying an ad through Google, I'd bid on a keyword -- say, I'll pay .25 cents for every click I get on an ad that appear on websites that use the word "progressive."

I always wondered how they targeted ads.  I just thought they followed the sites I'd been to previously and then they'd shoot their ad at me to get me to come back "right now!" and buy some stuff I don't need.

The "Taboola" ads that appear below stories are sometimes related to the last click or a resident cookie. Otherwise, Google's one sign-in means that it itself is tracking. Additionally, some merchants will follow you with cookies embedded and send you targeted content.

There are add-ons like HTTPS Everywhere and Disconnect that will always opt for secure connections and deny all advertising information. This is in addition to Ad-Aware (the most popular ad blocking software add-on), but ad-blockers do potentially cut down on potential revenue.

My feeling is this: I am not going to click on the right wing troll ads -- for fear of being harvested, if nothing else -- and I can no longer afford to support charitable giving or any but the fewest, most certain political donations. Therefore, I'm not costing a thing I could not give.

What you've searched for or looked at recently, and the content on the page.

So if you read a post about china, you may see ads for Chinese dating sites, china travel, Chinese hotels, travel agencies, etc.

If the post is about the missing plane, you may see ads for airlines, hotels, aviation companies, etc.

On the front page you're more likely to see generic ads that relate to other ads or sites you've visited. When I've been shopping, I'll see ads for whatever I've been shopping for. When I've been hunting for web hosting, I'll see ads for various hosting and web companies. If I've been looking for airfares, I'll see airline ads, hotel ads, etc.

Since this is a political site, you'll almost always see some political ads, at least at some point. The content of the ad may be totally opposite to the views of most here, but that's not how it's labeled. Or not, because some ads will deliberately tag the ad with every remotely appropriate tag, to get the widest placement.

You have a choice: 1) pay for a subscription so you don't have to look at the ads; 2) go find another internet site to view; or 3) get used to it.

Wait until campaign season heats up; things get even more strange around here.  In 2012, the site owners specifically instructed readers and bloggers to not complain to much about Obama, 'cause there was an election to win - yet there were plenty of these very obvious and obnoxious ads for conservative politicians all over the site saying all kinds of bs about the president that we liberals were encouraged not to say.

The ads are staying.  The ads are an important feature for the site owners.  If you don't like the ads, site partisan will tell you to buy a subscription so the sponsors' ads are hidden from you (tho' the site will continue to promote the obnoxious product or idea).  Many fans here will tell you that you should indeed click on the most offensive of the ads so that the advertisers then have to pay the dkos site more in revenue: it sort of a progressive ju-jitsu - capitalism in the service of well? capitalism.

And site partisans will tell you to not complain about the ads.   Progressives have to eat too, and if they do so by promoting the important messages from the Christian emergency pregnancy counseling service, or from the makers of Glock pistol, or from the guy that doesn't want you to buy no stinkin' Obama health care, you can be assure that those liberals don't actually believe any of that stuff - they only make money off those ads.

        Here's another one.

What the owner of this site said then and has been saying since he started DKos is that this is a Democratic site, the mission of which is to elect more and better Democrats. He has said if you're not on board w/that then find a site better suited for you.

In 2012 the top Democrat on the ticket was the president. The owner of this site wanted the president re-elected, and every Democrat we needed to save the senate. GOTV is also a big part of this site's mission, and the owner of this site is not interested in deflating progressives during elections.

Having said that, I'm not aware of anyone being banned because they said something nasty about Obama, unless they said it in a way that clashed w/site rules. Furthermore, there have been countless pie fights here over Obama, free for alls with everyone having their say into the hundreds and hundreds of comments.

I find this one of the most reasonably moderated political sites out there. And imo because of that it attracts smart folks who prefer conversation and information to drive by comment wars between factions, which is what the great majority of comment sites on political sites or articles are like.

        •  Support Dems by Promoting Cons (0+ / 0-)

          Yes indeed.

The site's owners made a conscious decision to promote the election campaigns of conservatives - along with all the crap conservatives say - in an effort to make money while telling everyone to elect more Dems.  And so during election season, this web-site devoted to the democratic party is covered with ads for conservative politicians and conservative causes.

So while we are not allowed to blog our criticisms of the democratic party, if you buy an ad, you can say anything you want about the democratic party, or any other subject.

Which is exactly the position of the John Robert's Supreme Court with regards to political speech - the more money you have, the more free the speech becomes.

So get out there and click on an ad: when you do so, you further the cause of electing more and better oligarchs.

          •  You have a rather narrow view (0+ / 0-)

of things that doesn't sing to me. This site's owner made NO decision to promote the election of conservatives. This is frankly, just silliness.  How it all works has been noted many times on this thread, so I won't waste my breath doing so again.

I don't think Kos is becoming rich off this site, and I don't think any of the paid writers are either. I have a fear that one day Kos will fold this thing---we'll click on the DK and there will be a notice that it's been sold, or shut down. Why this fear?

Because it takes A LOT of work and costs A LOT to float this boat every day. Kos has every right to make a decent living on it and offer the same to his employees. I'm just fine w/Kos getting the Ad revenue he needs. I have control over my mouse, and I don't need to click on anything I don't want to and, unlike you, do not take any ad on this site as the voice of this site.

And BTW, again, you ARE allowed to voice your criticisms of the Democratic party, and to say you aren't is just another version of the big lie. Like I said, happens here every day in a hundred ways, and has for the five years I've been here.

Now, if your postings are all about bashing the Democratic party in a troll like way, well that might be different.

I'm a Dem. but sometimes I just want to give them a swift kick to the ass for the stupid things they do or don't do.  This site to me is kind of the online equivalent of Bill Maher's show.  People can have different views, but they won't get run out of town for speaking their mind.

I'm also NOT a fan of Obama.  I only voted for him because he was the Dem. choice, all the other choices were crap and if I would've voted for say, an Independent, my vote really been a vote for the Repubs.  That being said, he has done some good things, but he's done a lot more that I really could smack him upside the head for!

If it was a perfect world, Hillary would've won in 2008.  She's got more balls than Obama does and I truly believe she would've put the Repub-tards in their place right off the bat.  I can't see her putting up with the shit Obama has.  And make no mistake.  They would've gone after her just as hard, because she's a woman.  And that's the second worse thing you can be to a Repub-tard.

        "the instaban, lady"!

Just like the title of the wonderful punctuation book by Lynn Truss, Eats, Shoots and Leaves. Imagine you looked up "panda" in the encyclopedia, and it said (among other things) "a panda eats shoots and leaves". That pretty much makes sense, right?

But if the article said "a panda eats, shoots and leaves", that might make you think that first the panda eats, then it shoots you, then it leaves. ;-D

Ah, what a difference a comma makes!

The "autoban" is an almost mythical dKos feature that, theoretically, autobans (that is, automatically bans) commenters, generally rightwing trolls, who show up, join here, and try to use the site to promote their rightwing delusions. This may be how it works or it may not...the mysteries of Teh Kos run very, very deep. In fact, for all we mere mortals (even if we are TUs) know, there really may be an autoban lady! I can see her in my mind's eye...sitting behind a huge console in the dKos Bunker with a dizzying array of meters, dials, switches, and flashing lights before her, dressed in Amazon-like attire with a Valkyrie-like helmet, ruthlessly wielding the Ban Hammer (I guess that means she's not named "Ruth").

Meanwhile, your diary and your comments are so good that I don't think there's reason for you to fear the autoban, lady!

Hehehe...betcha you don't know what "TU" means. ;-p

        Hint: "Trusted User".

And if you check out your own profile, you will find out that you are not called that yet, but - because of the quality of your posts and the number of "recommends" you have received - you will be soon! :-)

But welcome to dKos!  It regularly saves my sanity, and I read often, comment occasionally, and blog almost never.  I leave that to the folks who really understand it.

AdBlock added to your Chrome or something similar if you use a different browser.

If you use Chrome and see a Stop sign with a hand in it (up n the upper right hand corner of your browser) that's the AdBlock logo.
And a number next to it indicates how many ads it has defeated.

That is a great tip though and I'll have to remember it when I do use chrome.  I never noticed it before.  Now I'll be on the lookout for that little sucker!

Cause I have my cat, Mr. Meow Meow, but I got no clue what his political leanings are yet.  We'll find out when we go to the polls in November (Poor thing.  He needs me to fill in the ballot for him).

Does your cat like talkers?  Cause MMM is a BIG talker!  He's deaf and he thinks I'm deaf too and can't hear him, so he cranks up the volume to super loud for us (or me mostly), his "people".  He's also quite pushy.  Thought I should mention that too.  It's gotten him into some problems in the past (but we don't like to talk about that.  Shhhhh..........).

Anyway, let me know what Earnest T. thinks and maybe we can do lunch?

And I answer him. That is what scares me. His idea of lunch is sneaking into the pantry and crawling inside the cat food sack to eat.  I think I saw his father on a neighboring ranch last week. I'm looking for child support. I do believe he had a ride in a sack on a horse or a box on a four-wheeler. No way he walked. So I think I know his background but not totally sure. I do know he is liberal.

Luckily, Mr. Meow Meow hasn't figured out how to get into the bag of food, yet, but he has to get into every other bag though!  And you can't open a cabinet door without him sneaking inside, the little stinker!

  •  If they want to waste their advertising dollars (40+ / 0-)

here on Daily Kos, more power to 'em. Better they spend their ad $ here where it helps to support the infrastructure kos has set up, than spend their money somewhere that might actually convince a few low information voters that Al Franken, one time star of Air America, doesn't support free speech.

That said, welcome to Daily Kos!!!

And congratulations on a pretty fine first effort.

  •  The ads are random and key word oriented... (35+ / 0-)

the site has no control. The general attitude is if they want to waste money trying to convinces us of their nonsense, its money well wasted that can't be used elsewhere.

Feel free to click the links, it should give Kos revenue and take money from them.

      •  The space itself is actually to an ad company... (4+ / 0-)

who then does all the work of getting the advertisers. Then the site just works with the company selling the slot.

Otherwise the site would have to search for advertisers on its own which would be a lot of work.

        •  Ah, that makes sense (5+ / 0-)

Thanks for explaining how the ad space works.

I can see how selling directly to advertisers could open up a big can of worms regarding which advertisers Markos chose to deal with.  Any ad from an even slightly questionable advertiser or, heaven forbid, any ad with even a tinge of sexism, could fill the rec list with meta.  Imagine the pie fights!

This way is probably better, even if we are assaulted by Koch-Roach ads.

    •  Respectfully, I disagree. The site does have (6+ / 0-)

control of the ads, if they demand it.

It's the same as when companies/sponsors tell StopRush folks that they have no control over their ads being heard on the Rush Limbaugh show. They say when they buy radio ad blocks - they have no say. Indeed they do. They are the customers. Money talks and money listens. Now many companies put a 'No Rush Limbaugh' clause when buying ads. The radio networks certainly are not going to turn away a slew of sponsors over one talk show host, so they accommodate the 'No Rush' request.

We have to remember that our site/Daily Kos generates revenue for the companies that place the ads. If we speak out, and get others to join forces, eventually there will be a stop to certain kinds of ads - or Google/Ad Sense and many companies are going to lose a LOT of money.

Sure, Daily Kos might take a hit in revenue at first, and yes the revenue is needed for causes, but at the same time, losing those particularly offensive ads would push us up in respectability, thus inviting more people in who might donate even more. When people come on to any site and see ads that are disgusting and sexist, it says something about the site, in my opinion.

By allowing sexist ads on the site, we are contributing the degradation of women, and in worse case scenarios - violence against women. After being gone for a few hours, I no longer see the story ad earlier referred to in my comments,  of the beautiful young woman with tape on her mouth and around her face,  flaunting her scantily dressed body.

I thought we moved beyond that kind sexism in the 70's. Why are women once again fighting for respect in advertising, equal pay  and birth control pills… what the fuck happened?

The ads are wrong and I've felt this for a long time, not only with this site but with many liberal sites, and I'm ashamed I've not written about it. I didn't want to make waves - when it's my business to make waves.

Daily Kos has graduated to a higher lever. This site is now a leader among liberal/progessive sites. Other sites new and established look to us as an example. If Daily Kos put an end to a certain type of ads, others will follow. I'm not saying do away with all ads. Just the type referred to herein.

I really am grateful you brought this up, GirlSwimming. Welcome to the best liberal community out there. You're going to do very well.

we see in politics, and in the world, I am still a bleeding optimist. Like you, I am unsure if it has been done by any sites as of yet. That said, I believe if we see something that is wrong, our voices can and do make a difference.

Most sites are told they don't have a say, but again, with the millions of views this site gets per day, the advertisers and Google/Ad sense would be foolish not to listen. Only a few changes need to be made.

he lost.  I thought for SURE he'd beat her ass.  Especially when we got to our polling place to vote.  I've lived here almost 20 years and it has never been as packed as it was for that election.  All the college kids were there, getting registered at St. Cloud City Hall to vote.  It brought a tear to my eye, I tell ya!   Sniff

I voted for Graves too and I will again, if he runs.  I think he'd do a good job.  Of course, A trained hamster could do a better job than Miss "Facts?  What are these things you call facts?"

I've read where you need almost twice as many Dems voting as you do Repub-tards to win an election now, because they have a higher voter turn-out than the Dems. do.  I thought for SURE she was dead in the water when the papermill in Sauk Rapids burned down and she was the ONLY politician that "couldn't be bothered" to show up.  And it's in HER damn district!  But the thing that pisses me off the most about her, She doesn't even LIVE in this district anymore!  She lives in Stillwater, which is ALL BLUE and she'd never stand a chance there, so she got to run in this district because she was the incumbent.  I'm sorry, you should have to LIVE in the district you represent!

And I think I know why she's leaving.  She doesn't want all her dirty laundry coming out (kinda like he hubby!  :O  ), from that indictment they've got going against her.  And also, losing by only 5000 votes last time had to have made her just shit her pants!  She had to know she was toast then too.

Well, I say, "Good riddance to BAD rubbish!"  And God, she's the biggest, stinkiest pile there is!!

  •  Click on them. It earns the site money. (8+ / 0-)

Be very afraid if the ads turn into something you want very badly and cannot resist clicking.

For now consider it your way of supporting the site.

  •  One of the reasons the ads follow you home (16+ / 0-)

is that you gave them cookies.
Periodically clear your cookies, it confuses the ad dealer.
Also if you are looking up stuff that you don't want to see ads for later, use the incognito window of your browser, those "truck" ads won't give you away.
I made the mistake of wondering what a "spanx" was and went a couple months with a lurid series of girdle ads.
    And right now I have toefungus/white tongue/sick-to-his-stomach-man.
But my favorite are the NewsMax ones because that means CONservatives are wasting their money, better yet, they are supporting dKos. Click on those ads and make them pay kos!
Just don't give them your eMail or any money.

    What am I missing?

ps, I like your first diary.

  •  Welcome (8+ / 0-)

You aren't "expected" to blog. In fact many folk never do post a diary. Some just read, but many of us read and comment. In fact, if you are expected to do anything, it is to comment in your own diary, as well as others, and engage in discussion with those who too the time to read your ideas and respond to them.

That said, your first diary is  pretty good one, and I think many of us hope to see more. (but we'd also like to see you respond to our comments, or comment in other diaries too, if I haven't mentioned that)

As to the ads, others are almost certainly giving you good feedback on that issue. And the original DKos Pie Fight is proof it has been a long standing issue.

enough here that I have not been kicked off since I started posting a few weeks ago, so you should not have any problem.  It is a relief to make political remarks without worrying about getting hollered at excessively or having a neighbor decide to stand their ground.

The other day I was posting on a thread about equal pay and respect for women.  Right above the thread was an ad about big-bosomed women.  It was kind of funny actually.

  •  Welcome! (3+ / 0-)

Most of the commenters up thread were on target about the nature of ad buys on the internet. The Koch's buy the political web and they burn through their cash doing it. (OK, they burn through more money on TV ads, but those web buys count!)

Sorry that you're in Bachman's district, but look at it this way, she's not running again so you'll be free of her crazy after November. Enjoy the site. The last time I wrote a diary was after the 2004 primaries. The proprietors of the site still let me hang out here.

That the effort to control the ads wasn't worth it, and that if conservatives want to waste their money by serving ads to people who are not going to be receptive to them, perhaps that's not such a bad thing anyway...

Also, welcome! The great think about DK is that you can participate as much or as little as you want. There are many excellent writers here who frequently write diaries, and there are plenty of people like me, who hardly write any, and just comment when the urge comes up!

Stay with us and know we share your pain and joys!

  •  Welcome to DKos from another Minnesotan (5+ / 0-)

Don't worry about the ads. Most of the time they're trying to target you based on various computer algorithms of what kind of person they think you are.

Here are several examples from my life:

The ads sometimes target your physical location. I live in Moorhead, MN, but my IP address comes from my internet provider across the river in Fargo, ND. So I get ads all the time about North Dakota (saving money on car insurance, whatever). The computer picking ads sends me ND stuff because it thinks that's where I live.

Sometimes they target your behavior on the internet. A year ago, my girlfriend was joining her parents in France and, while at my house, she googled some hotels and various other things in Paris. So, for a while, I was getting lots of ads for Paris hotels. Because of some Google searches (which were from my computer, but not from me).

Similarly, a while back I was googling prices for new computers, so for a while I was getting lots of ads from Best Buy and other such companies (I did click on some of these ads and they were helpful -- so that's one instance when the targeting was good).

Sometimes the ads notice what's on the page you're looking at. But this sometimes leads to comical results. For example, if you're reading a Daily Kos diary about Michele Bachmann's idiocy and it mentions her several times, you might get some ad that suggests you can donate money to Bachmann. You can either ignore the ad or -- as some have suggested -- if you click on the ad a fraction of a penny goes to Daily Kos.

    --

All of that targeting makes sense in a way. If you sell insurance in ND, you want to target people who live in that state. If you run a hotel in France, and you can find people googling hotels in France, well they're obviously interested. And if you're reading something about Michele Bachmann, maybe you're a Republican.

It's just a modern version of sending junk mail to a rented mailing list (which is something I did a long long time ago). So if you're sending out junk mail about a fancy carburetor, maybe you'd rent a list from "Hot Rod Magazine" but not from, say, "Good Housekeeping" magazine. Or if you're selling upscale cooking equipment, you narrow it down to certain zip codes where rich people live.

    Hope this helps explain it.

I always thought it was funny to see the conservative ads.  I can tell you that Kossacks don't pay them no mind.

... addressing this issue at one point. I may be imagining it, but I think he said at the time the site could block conservative-oriented ads, but he expressed the same opinion others have here — if conservative groups and pols want to waste their money trying to reach people immune to their message, let them. And if some of that money actually helps support DKos, all the better.

Again, if I recall correctly, he did poll the community on the subject, and the majority agreed to let the wingnuts continue wasting their money by advertising to an audience they're never going to convince.

  •  Many good answers here (7+ / 0-)

I'll add that everyone sees different ads, and that they come from Google Ads. Google has its own algorithm for deciding what ads to send to you, some of which is based on the content of the page and some of which is based on what places its seen you visit on the internet lately.

If you want more attractive ads, I recommend visiting a website of a car manufacturer, a major camera store, or a travel destination. Those seem to be unusually sticky.

Realistically, most companies that buy ads are shades of gray. Trying to put every possible advertiser into a whitelist/blacklist bucket would make someone's head explode.

  •  As noted above 'The Great Pie Fight' was (5+ / 0-)

a direct result of controversial adverts appearing on DKos.

Markos addressed this here (while alluding to 'The Great Pie Fight').

    Succinctly...

Running an ad doesn't imply endorsement. But, if I start rejecting ads, THEN every ad that DOES run has an implied endorsement.
As Kos said, you aren't stupid and you recognise wingnut tripe when you see it (you did write this diary, after all!). Click on the ads you hate the most (don't forget to delete your cookies after each session!) and help Kos collect money to pay for DKos server space, wages etc.

Otherwise you can follow simplify's advice and install Adblock Plus and NoScript. I don't use Ghostery simply because I've found it unnecessary.

That said, a nicely constructed first diary. Well done!

The ad that was the basis for this thread was just like that.  It looked normal, but I thought I knew what it was saying was wrong.  So, I got on my little webby train and did some digging til I found out it was those bastards the Koch Bros. behind it.  They are so extremely deceptive that if you don't know the issue they're hawking, you might just assume it's from your party and then blindly click on it.  That's what they want.  Really shitty way of advertising if you ask me.  Not to mention the out right lies they spew in their other ads that you know are theirs!

This whole thing did teach me a good lesson though.  Look at who's running the ad before you click on it!  And if you you're still not sure who's running it, check them out.  It was definitely worth the little amount of time it took me to find out exactly what I needed to know.

  •  Here's my question (0+ / 0-)

So, let us suppose that Ad-Words is controlling the ad appearance. Ad-Words is auctioned (I guess -- it's very hush-hush).

Why, then, would revolting Koch ads appear here? Why would anti-Democratic Party ads dominate? I have seen (from computers without filters) a few petitions and Democratic appeals, but here is the real question:
Is it possible that the GOP considers it an effective and useful contribution and use of money to buy up the ad-words to prevent our candidates and causes from being able to appear even on our own sites?

If advertising space and priority here is simply brute force bidding, we know who considers a bribe or a direct mailing of mud to be "good campaigning."

It's one thing when NewsMax advertises on Wonkette -- that's clear and obvious -- but it's another when the randomized slots are politically diametrically opposed, consistently.

    •  Hmmm....I never thought of that way (0+ / 0-)

You could be right.  Maybe that is part of their evil plan.

But, you know, I'm thinking that most people that are on here are like me, they're not going to change their views about the Repub-tards ever.  And I know no amount of advertising is going to make me change my mind.  And I still get ads from the Dems. here too, so I don't know.  Your thought might have some truth in it though.  Who knows.

Damn, does anyone else feel George Orwell is coming back to haunt and tell us, "See?  I told ya so!"

  •  See how this place is? (0+ / 0-)

Some awesome Kossack bought you a subscription. Nice diary!

  •  Great first diary.... (0+ / 0-)

you humor shows through your words.

Don't worry about whether or not you write a lot or a little.  People are not too judgmental but there are a few flare ups here between posters, but it mostly shows in comments.  Sure, there is the occasional trashing of a diarist but not all that often.  Of course during primary season all rules are off and the tension mounts.

Many of us do not write a lot of diaries. I have written a few but I am a retired teacher and I find myself feeling obligated to answer every response (it's a teacher thing for some of us).

But welcome.  Your question was legitimate and asked by many.

Several years ago a hs friend of mine lived in St. Cloud. After Bachman got elected I emailed her and asked "What kind of people live there that they would elect this strange, not too bright, pathetic woman??"  By then she and her husband had retired and moved (their children having grown into adulthood).  She laughed and said, "It has some strange strange folks in that neck of the woods." That's all she said.  She and her hubby are both liberal but not activists.

    •  AWESOME!! (0+ / 0-)

I love the St. Croix.  I've done lots of canoeing on it with my Gramps and camping there with my friends.  It's a gorgeous area.  But I'm embarrassed to admit it, I've never been to the park right across from the one in Taylor's Falls , on the Wisconsin side (I'm guessing it's a state park on that side of the river too?).  I've always wondered what it's like though.  Guess I'll have to get off my butt and head on over and check it out!  Have also spent LOTS of great summer days tubing the Apple River!  Love it!!  Best way to beat the heat and it's so much fun, as long as you're not getting boobs flashed in your face every 2 seconds!  HAHA!

I should be extending my sympathies to you for the morons that are running your state into the ground.  It's such a shame.  How can these people live in a great state like yours and then purposely want to destroy it?  That's crazy, right?  I'm glad we don't have too many of those nut jobs that made it into office over here.  We have a few, but not enough to do any damage, thank god.

Everyone's been so nice and you guys are so funny!  It's great when you can talk about deep subjects but still stick some zingers into the mix!  And so far, I haven't offended one person!  I'm on a roll!  Yee-haw!!  :)

  •  my welcome as well Carmen, (0+ / 0-)

Now you nave no need to waste your time watching TV news!

    •  Thanks for the kind welcoming Joe! (0+ / 0-)

I really don't watch a lot of TV news.  I get most of my news online.  I like the International sites the best, BBC, Reuters, etc. because you get more global stories there.  But this place has had some stuff on it that I'd never heard of so this is getting to be my go to place for news on the home front.

But surprisingly, here in Minnesota, our news is more left leaning and they do a pretty job of giving both sides of the story.  One of the news channels here even has a segment just on that.  Going after both political parties when they try to "stretch" the truth.  And guess which party is on it the most?  Well, it's not the one we like, that's for sure!!

I actually commented on a comment you made on that Cliven dude out there in Nevada.  I hadn't even heard about it so I decided to check it out.  I so agree with you that he is a thieving ass.  Funny how the bastards with the most money bitch about how they're getting screwed.  What a joke!  You were talking about cattle and stuff and how much you'd pay to graze your animals on Govt. land, etc.  You seriously enlightened me! Honest!!  I don't know a heck of a lot about cows, even though I live in a dairy state!  Shocking I know, right?!  Us city girls just don't get up close and personal with the cows too much (even though I think they're kinda cute-especially those little baby moos!).  I wave to 'em when I drive by them though.  Does that count for anything?  Yeah, I thought not.  Bummer!  Or how bout going and seeing them at the State Fair?  No?  Damn, At least I'm tryin to up my cow cred! Oh well.  I'd never survive on a farm with cows.  One step in a cow pie and I'd be so gone!!  HAHAHA!

But after reading your comment, now I actually know a little something about what it takes to raise cows and that's a really cool thing!  So, thank you for teaching me something new!

  •  Ads (0+ / 0-)

Sorry if I am repeating what someone else has said, but I don't have the time at the moment to wade through the 207 comments posted so far (Although I read quite a few) - my fault for being a late poster. I've been ill and have been detached from the world for several weeks.

First, you can subscribe ($40 a year) which allows you to turn off the ads.

Second, there is no pressure, nor requirement, to post a diary.

Third, if you can't afford to subscribe, I suggest you donate a few bucks to help keep this site up - it is an oasis in a sea of unreason. Unfortunately, you will still have to endure some ads in direct opposition to your beliefs, but such is the price of democracy - even dirtbags and fools have the right to express their beliefs (although, wouldn't it be great if elected politicians where given a quota of lies they could tell, and once exceeded--out they go?).

Fourth, this ad problem is everywhere. Nothing like seeing an ad for a steak house on a vegetarian site or pro-gun advertisement along side a plea for stronger gun registration laws.

And last, welcome - breath deep the scent of reason and ignore the ads you find disagreeable.

It would be better not to know so many things than to know so many things that are not so. - Felix Okaye
