Welcome to the Tuesday edition of the Coffee Hour at Street Prophets. This is an open thread where we can discuss what’s happening in our lives, what we’ve been working on, and our opinions on current events. For today’s starting point, I’d thought I’d bring up the topic of dead zoos.
First, an explanation of the term “dead zoo:” in Dublin, Ireland, the locals call the natural history museum which is filled with stuffed animals, the Dead Zoo. On a recent visit to the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum in Tillamook, Oregon, we encountered a floor of the museum that was labeled “The Alex Walker Natural Room” which was filled with stuff animals of all kinds, ranging from birds to bears, and from local Oregon animals to those from Africa. There were animal heads mounted on the walls and cases filled with shelves of smaller birds and mammals. Along three of the walls there were dioramas which displayed animals in a natural setting. Shown below are some photographs of this dead zoo.
This is an open thread. You can talk about zoos (living or dead), about animals (including humans and politicians), or whatever else is on your mind. As usual, discussions of food and weather are welcomed.
