Tonight is primary night in North Carolina and in one particular county, Orange, the home of UNC, there was a Democratic primary race for Registrar of Deeds. Now you might be asking yourself why is this important. The answer is in one of the duties Registrars of Deeds have in North Carolina is to sign marriage licenses.
In this race one candidate, Mark Chilton, the former mayor of Carrboro openly stated that if elected he would sign marriage licenses for same sex couples. He even made a campaign jingle centered around his opposition to Amendment 1 (the NC state Constitutional amendment that banned gay marriage) linked below.

Well it appears Mark Chilton has narrowly won the Democratic nomination in Orange county and faces no Republican opposition in a county that voted 70%+ against the marriage amendment and so it is likely that come next year we may see marriage licenses being issued for same sex couples in at least one county in North Carolina.
