The Catholic bishop of Oakland wants teachers in his schools to fall in line. In their contract, teachers are now required to abide by the bishop's church teachings at all times--in other words, in their professional and personal lives.
One teacher said "no".
"I decided after much consideration that in good conscience that I could not put my name to this new language," said Kathleen Purcell.
She fears church officials could use the language to target those who don't conform to certain traditions such as teachers who are gay or take certain political stances.
You see, bishops believe in freedom of conscience as long as it agrees with their own.
The bishop's spokesman said, "this in not a witch hunt". Yeah, we have heard that before. Would you trust a bishop ?
Well, good for the teacher:
Purcell crossed off the clause in her contract before submitting to school officials. She was told the amended contract would not be accepted.
"Because I crossed this out I will not be able to work at O'Dowd anymore," she said. "I'm grieving. It makes me very, very sad."
