NBC News has bagged an interview with Edward Snowden and is running teasers before the whole thing is broadcast tonight. Most of the international media has lit up like a Christmas tree. I did notice that The Guardian that broke the revelations to begin with is so far turning up its well breed British nose at NBC.
What is being presented as a shocking new revelation is Snowden's claim that he qualifies as a "real" spy. This seems to be intended as support for his general credibility. The US government has attempted to portray him as a person of no great importance.
It doesn't appear that Snowden is actually revealing any new factual information about his background. It was already known that he had previously worked for the CIA and that he had been stationed in Geneva.
It has always seemed to me that Snowden was able to present a huge collection of documentary evidence. In many instances the government has not denied the essential facts of the evidence that he presented. Their claims have been along the lines of saying that revealing it posed a threat to national security and that Snowden is a criminal and a traitor for having done so. I suppose that having direct experience in intelligence operations would give him some sophistication in the ability to select information over someone who was "just" a system administrator.
That all seems rather beside the point. Most of the information appears to be true and to raise very serious questions about government practices. Snowden was the messenger that brought it to the attention of the public. His personal competency and culpability doesn't impact the validity and importance of the information.
Unless this interview reveals more than we have heard so far, it sounds like mostly media hype.
