Los Angeles hosted Sandra Fluke (rhymes with book) this afternoon at Casey's Irish Bar as she talked about her plan to represent the California State Senate District 26 as a progressive Democrat.
Hoping to build on her reputation as a passionate supporter of women's rights and access to reproductive health and contraception, and take that enthusiasm and desire for positive change to Sacramento, Ms. Fluke, who is a member of Daily Kos, told us about her family history of union membership, her desire to stop the increasing evil of human trafficking, and her advocacy of campaign finance and political ethics reform. She outlined a comprehensive platform of liberal issues and mentioned a situation particular to Los Angeles: too much movie and TV production has been moved out of the country to Vancouver and Toronto.
We have video! PanoramaCityChick recorded Sandra's talk and Shockwave writes more about it here (with videos)
We also had the pleasure of welcoming special guest tmservo433 from Kansas & Missouri Kossacks. He recently spent a lot of time traveling around the state to find out what's happening in Kansas now http://www.dailykos.com/...
It was my good fortune that he decided to sit across the table from us. We can read about what's going on around the country every day, but there is no substitute for talking with someone who is active in an area and can answer your questions. He says that one Kansas county has rejected state money for contraceptive services, claiming incorrectly that use of an IUD is tantamount to abortion, so granting access to certain types of long-term birth control is like allowing murder.
Casey's Irish Bar in downtown L.A. has become one of our most popular meeting places. Accessible by public transit and a couple of blocks from the freeway, the food is good, it seems like the drinks are popular (as long as there is Diet Coke, I'm happy) and there is a big room with a long table and some booths that can be closed off from the rest of the bar.
Let's plan some meetups together. The weather is great and L.A. has lots of great places to hang out. If we want to go somewhere not immediately close to public transit, we can carpool from train stations. We can have a picnic, go to a nature sanctuary, an public garden. jakedog42 has suggested the space shuttle museum. Please Kosmail, email or text me with your ideas.
Here we are, all ready to listen to Sandra Fluke.
